Back from the ER again

I could not keep little ones temp down. By time we got to the ER (about 45min drive) his temp was 104.5.   They checked him out and besides the double (really horrible) ear infection he also has strep throat and a upper respiratory infection.

They have him some mega antibotics but I can not fill them till tomorrow (if the weather does not get bad).

I have to make an appointment with his PCM and have his ears checked again Wed. this doc said it looks like they may have to put tubes in. (it was that bad)

The doc did tell me the meds they gave him the first time we went were 60% designed to fail for ear infections.

Re: Back from the ER again

  • Poor kid! I had tubes put in and taken out over 5 times when I was younger! I hope it helps! It did when I was a kid!

It through me for a loop because this is his first ever ear infection. But apperantly when my kids get sick they go big

(edit to make myself clear-- can't nest and watch shameless at the same time)

True.. I know I had them constantly for a good 6 months before they put tubes in the first time (or so my mom says).

  • I had three sets of tubes as a kid and two as an adult. I'm contemplating asking to get them again as I have frequent ear infections. I usually stick a peeled clove of garlic in my ear and do a wax treatment before going in for antibiotics. Benedryl helps dry up the fluid for me.

ETA: I would hold off on tubes. Tubes are to lessen frequent ear infections. I know when I was a kid, they put me out to place them. As an adult, they just did it in office. It sounds like a vacuum and a ton of pressure plus a sharp pinch.

Yep, a peeled clove of garlic (I like to warm it up just a bit in the microwave) is soooo soothing for me and I also have frequent ear infections and I had them quite a bit as a kid but I never had tubes put in. My infections are often caused by too much wax so I usually do an ear candle...it's controversial I guess but it works wonders for me. I had a pretty severe infection about a year ago and even the doctor flushing out my ear in the office did not get it out. I went home, did it, felt the most amazing 'pop', and it totally cleared me out. But, again, that's for wax buildup, I'm not sure what is causing your poor little guy's infection. But I would recommend the garlic clove is it draws out a lot of the bacteria.

  • You'll have to forgive my ignorance on the subject, but it sounds like they made a bad choice of meds the first time around. Did they offer any explanation as to why that decision was made? I'd be a bit of an angry mama bear.

Hopefully you guys can get the new meds tomorrow and they help him out!

  • I went to different ER this time, but the doc did say that most docs will start with a level 1 antibiotics so if it works great and their body wont get used to stronger stuff. This doc went to what he referred to as a level 3. I hope our pharmacy is open tomorrow.

I agree with this! And I would probably get a second opinion about the tubes. Everytime I got mine put in or taken out (if they didn't fall out) I was put under anesthesia. And while they helped while they were in they were constantly falling out.

Though, they might have come a long way since the last time I've had them put in..

Oh yes, I will be calling his ped. and taking him in this week for a double check on his ears. 1. to make sure the meds are working, and 2. to ask about the tubes.
