How Small For Checked Luggage?

Yeah, you read that right, how small can a checked item be? I have a pocket knife I want to check, and I can check it for free because I fly too freaking much. I don't want to check any more of the rest of my stuff than necessary because there is very little of it and I don't want it to be lost...

I've heard that the some airports impose a minimum because of their luggage sorting systems. However, I checked a 500ml bottle of alcohol once that I forgot to move out of my Duty-Free bag before US security. It was plastic, so the desk agent went and found a box and some newspaper and taped it up for me.
For the pocketknife, you'd probably need to put it in something else, because at the very least, they need to attach the luggage tag!
