AW: More home improvements (warning: large pictures)

We painted the living room today with some very able-bodied friends. Man, they were fast!

Wall color is now Behr's "Ocean Pearl" paint + primer. We were able to cover the red wall in just two coats!

We still have to get new floors and baseboards, and eventually crown molding. It looks so much bigger!

  • Love the new color you picked. It's all coming together nicely!

Thanks! I still can't believe how fast my friends painted. H and I were barely helpful lol. They were like a MACHINE. My friend's bf used to paint houses back in high school or college, so he knows what he's doing. I learned some very helpful tips along the way, too. I have leftovers of the paint, so I'm going to use it in the entryway where the old green still is. There's a chair rail, too. I might do it the same white trim, and that green/gray color...I don't know if I should just do the same above and below the rail, or if I should get a gallon of the same color but a shade lighter to put on the top. What would you do, decorative OK nesties?

  • Nice job! I love how the first picture is photo-bombed by your dog.

Please share what you learned.  I'm about to tackle our hallway and other spare bedroom.  The green looks good!  Does you friend hire out?

    I don't know, but I'll ask him!

As for tips: tape is incredibly important. Spend your time getting it perfect around whatever you need to tape. Go around and do the trim all around the tape first with a thin coat. By the time you've gone around the room the first coat is dry enough to go over again. When you're ready to roll (maybe 30 minutes later), really load up your roller. Go bottom to top, straight up and down, then move over a step. Go up and down again. Go over a step. Go up and down. By now your roller should be almost dry. Load up again, go back a step and re-cover, then follow the same procedure around the room. It goes really fast this way! He also recommends (as do I...we covered a brick red wall in just two coats) paint + primer. I used Behr and am VERY happy with it. I can't use Kilz, even the low-odor, because I'm really susceptible to the fumes. This stuff didn't bother me at all!
