red velvet cake recipe

Who's got one?  I want to make cupcakes to bring to work on Valentine's Day. I'd prefer a true red velvet recipe (not hoards of red food coloring), but will take any recommended recipe!

It HAS to be made with chocolate, and minimal red food coloring!!!! I have an awesome family recipe but I can't find it on my computer right now :/ I'll post it tomorrow if I can find it! Otherwise can you try food.com and doing a search by rating?? :) That's my go to!

  • I honestly can't remember which recipe I've used... I've made red velvet whoopie pies & red velvet cheesecake cake in the past. Here are several recipes to chose from: http://www.crumblycookie.net/2009/02/12/red-velvet-cake-comparison/

  • I have this one in the oven right now (I'm making two rounds instead of cupcakes). Hopefully it is good! The only changes I made were 1/3c cocoa powder, buttermilk instead of milk, and gel food coloring.I think the addition of the sour cream will benefit the flavor and moistness.

The cocoa is in there just to make it the red color. You aren't supposed to taste it in a red velvet, which is why I reduced it. I used gel coloring because I don't buy liquid and I could use less of it.

    Follow-up review of this recipe.

The flavor was excellent, but the cake was dry. I don't recommend it. If you find a great recipe, let me know. I can't seem to find a good red velvet.
