Familiar with Lisbon, Portugal airport?

On our way back from Italy we have a layover in Lisbon that lasts 4 hours and 15 minutes.  Is this enough time to have a driver pick us up, get food outside the airport and back?  I don't want to miss our flight but I hate to waste that much time.

Re: Familiar with Lisbon, Portugal airport?

  • I've only been to Lisbon once but was pretty overwhelmed by the traffic. I don't know if there's anything closer to the airport, but I think it took us around 45 minutes to get into town on the bus (we had a car for the earlier part in Portugal and dropped it off at the airport before spending a couple days in Lisbon). I definitely wouldn't risk going into the city. By the time you get out of the airport, you'll only have a short time before you have to get back to the airport to get back through security.

  • Where are you flying to/from?

Ditto PittPurple that traffic makes it hard to get into town. I went downtown when I had an 8-hour connection, and it also took me about 45 minutes each direction. But that was to get to the city center. There is also a big shopping area quite close to the airport (near the aquarium), so that might be an option. I wasn't planning to have such a long stop (I missed my NYC connection to Oslo and ended up rerouted through Lisbon with a long wait for the next Oslo-bound flight), so I just asked for suggestions at the airport tourism desk, and that was what they recommended for a shorter stop.

However, if you don't have a European passport, this is going to depend a lot on luck and scheduling. If you're arriving from outside Europe and your final destination is within the Schengen zone, you'll have to clear passport control in Lisbon whether you end up leaving the airport or not. I've flown into Lisbon twice, and the first time (the unexpected visit) I didn't have any problems, but a few months ago I was on a flight from Brazil that came in right after some of the African flights. There were soooooo many people in the non-European line, and since so many of them were coming from developing countries, it meant a lot of immigration questions. I was in line for around an hour, and they were constantly announcing onward flights so that those people could use the diplomatic line and make it to their connections. Luckily, you'll know if you're facing this delay as soon as you're off the plane, so you'll know right away how long you really have.

Honestly, 4 hours isn't that long for an international connection. I would only consider leaving the airport if you fly through passport control, and even then I'd try to stay in the area close to the airport. The nice thing about Lisbon is that there is a commercial area close to the airport, so you don't have to make the long trek all the way into town.

  •  I've been to Lisbon a few times and I must have had amazing luck, but it was so quick to get to the city.  I think Lisbon's airport is probably located closest to the city center compared to other cities.

However, that being said, 4 hours is too risky to leave the airport IMO.  I would assume their should be some restaurants in or right by the airport.

  • I found Lisbon to be a pretty airport to get through and relatively close to the city center.  That being said - with 4 hours on an international connection I would not leave the airport.  Even if you sailed through customs and hit no traffic, you'd have a maximum of one hour before you had to head back and do it all over again.  It'd be too stressful and not worth it.
