YHL Kitchen

Man, I really hate those shelves. I'm not super opposed to open shelves, but they look way too big for the space. And I'm really not a fan of the lab benches at the peninsula.

  • That color is horrible.  Horrible horrible.

I think it would look ten million times better if they just painted the walls a different color.

I'm a fan of open shelving, but I think they have too many brackets on the left, or something is off.

  • I keep waiting for it all to come together, because I really do like most of what they do, but this just isn't doing it for me.

I am not a fan of the range hood.  It's too boxy, and looks homemade, and I think it's hung too high.

The shelves would have looked so much better if they'd gone for floating ones like they originally planned.  The brackets are just too heavy. And I am pretty anti-open shelving.  I think it looks beautiful in magazines, but I would definitely NOT want them in real life.  They just seem like a pain in the @ss.  I have some glass front cabinets in my kitchen, and they're basically for all the stuff I don't use, because I can just set them up once to look pretty, and not think about them anymore.

I don't hate the lab chairs.  I'm hoping they decide to paint them some fun color, and I think that will make me like them a lot more.

Yes! I actually didn't mind it when they first painted, but now with everything else that they've done, it just looks sickly and dull.

  • We have an open unit in our kitchen, and it's a mix between stuff we use all the time (pots and pans) and stuff that we barely ever touch (ice cream machine).  I really like it, and since we have zero storage it's kind of a necessity.

Anyway, I forgot about the range hood until you mentioned it.  That thing looks like absolute crap.  I know they didn't want to deal with so many angles, but good lord.  That is horrible.

I completely agree with all of this. I actually really like the tile and think floating shelves would better showcase it. I laugh that they keep defending open shelving. The room would look so pretty painted a rich grey.

  • Oh ditto on the range hood. I get and appreciate that they're trying to be frugal, but kitchen renos are pricey for a reason - they look like crap otherwise. Thy need to spend some darn money and buy real cabinet doors and crap.

  • I don't think it looks that cheap other than the hood and I think that's a problem of scale/size. I'd be pretty thrilled with the transformation if it was in my house.

  • I'll bite my tongue on the science lab stools because my mom said if I can't say anything nice........... (basically I hate them.)

I don't mind the wall color.  I would need to see the hood in person to decide how much it offends me.  At first glance it doesn't bother me too much.

The shelves....yeah, no. I think for me it's the brackets.  They are too huge and chunky.  And they have lots of big chunky items on the shelves.  Floating shelves with items that are too scale with the space would work much better.

I love love love penny tiles.

  • They definitely need to paint.  I HATE the color in that space.

The brackets are way to big and I think to many of them.  I would have done 2 or 3 brackets, not 4.

I hate the stoosl and I feel like if they paint them it's just going to cheapen the space even more.

The range hood isn't awful, but it is hung way to high.  I've been waiting for the crown molding to help with the scale of things and it just didn't.

    I love their sink.

Oh and John, he is gayer than gay.

  • Yeah, Fallin.  I think some of the things they chose are great (penny tile, I love the white countertops, lighting).  But I think the hood just looks so out of place.  It's so blocky or something compared to the openness they've got going on in that area.

I think if they redid that and repainted, I'd give them an A+

  • They said they hung the hood in the middle of the recommended distance but I wonder if they measured from the top of the part with dials and were supposed to measure from the cook top surface. Or something.

  • I think the problem with the hood for me is it being flush with the top shelves. It creates this awkward negative space between the shelves and the stove. I think I'd like it better if it came down to somewhere between the two shelf levels to break up that hard horizontal line.
