Anyone ever had massage therapy covered by insurance
I tore a muscle 6 months ago and need massage to keep it lose and prevent pain. I've been trying to have my husband do it because it's much cheaper than going to a massage therapist. I think I may need weekly or biweekly sessions to really heal. Has anyone every been successful in having this covered by insurance (obviously after going to the doc and getting a prescription of sorts). I guess I'd like some feedback before wasting my time and money at the doctor.
Re: Anyone ever had massage therapy covered by insurance
My doctor told me it's nearly impossible (if not 100% impossible) to get a massage covered my insurance.
I wonder if it depends on where you go? If you went to a physical therapist vs. a massage therapist?
I benefit greatly from massage over and beyond just feeling relaxed/pampered but I have to pay out of pocket for it.
I'm not a huge fan of places like Massage Envy but if you go often enough one of their packages might benefit you?
If you go to a physical therapy place you'll probably have a better chance of it being covered - you might end up paying for it with an HSA account instead though... I'd definitely check into your health insurance plan, some of them do cover chiropractors and "wellness" appointments. I'd say a massage counts as a "wellness" appointment!
My boss' son is an athlete and his insurance covers physical therapy - massage is part of the physical therapy, so I know it can be done!
My chiropractor prescribed them for me, but it was after a car accident so, it's my auto insurance paying for them, not my medical insurance. I've heard it's very hard to get medical insurance to pay for them. They are completely wonderful though. I don't know what I'm going to do when I'm completely healed and insurance won't pay for them anymore.
I have in the past. It was for migraines though. Dr gave me a script and I went through it pretty fast so they wrote me a referral for massage therapy and ultrasound (done at the clinic) and I did that 2x/week.
Aside from helping my headaches - getting upper back massages were amazing.
I have! It was after physical therapy and muscle relaxants didn't work, and I was having debilitating headaches from the chronic spasm of my trapezius muscles. It was awesome. But it was through at PT place.
I would call your insurance and ask if there is a way to get it covered.
Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
