Anybody use Windows 7?

My computer's been slow for a while now. I have Windows Vista, and it was recommended to me to switch to Windows 7 to speed it up. (I've already deleted all the unnecessary files etc... and it defragments every week on schedule)

I have the link online from Windows that'll take me through the process of switching, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had any opinions. And does anyone know if it costs money to switch?

Re: Anybody use Windows 7?

  • It will probably cost money to switch, yes, because you will have to purchase a new license for Windows 7.  If you want to speed up your computer, weekly defrag is useless - if you did it twice a year that'd be plenty.  I'm going to assume you run an anti-virus/anti-malware program like McAfee, but if you don't already then look into that.

To speed up your computer, get more memory.  Windows 7 is a slightly faster, more efficient, less crash-prone operating system than Vista, for certain, but is it worth it for you to pay for new licensing?  Probably not.  Sounds like you've got a small amount of hardware you're expecting too much of.  You just need more RAM.

Is it a desktop or a laptop?  It's easier to fix this in a desktop than a laptop.

  • Agree with pp. Dh upgraded my 3.5yr old Sony Vaio laptop from Vista to Win 7 and it actually made the slowness worse. Now it's time for more RAM and if that doesn't work.....

  • It's only a laptop :-P I think it's 3 or 4 years old at this point.

How much RAM should I have? My computer says it has 2.00 GB. Is that unrelated to the amount of space on my hard disk? I don't really know much about computers, and I assumed everything in that area would be fine since it shows I've only used 113 out of 221 GB on my hard disk, but if RAM is completely different then that might be the problem after all. Is putting in more RAM something I could do myself?

  • Yes you can upgrade RAM yourself if you are okay with opening up your laptop. But if you don't know much about computers you might not want to mess with it. Also, there is a limit on how much RAM you can add to your particular computer, you'll have to check your computer's documentation.

The standard now is 3-4GB of RAM. 6 or 8GB is higher end.

The space on your hard drive is not related to the amount of RAM, but it WILL affect the speed of your computer also. If your hard drive is almost full, that will slow down your computer. If that's the case, get rid of some files, run the Defragmentation on your computer, and/or get an external hard drive to store old files you don't need. But it doesn't look like yours is that full.

You can also try some anti-spyware/anti-malware/anti-bloatware programs to clean up other unnecessary files or spyware programs that can mess up your computer.

Upgrading to Windows 7 will cost you money. It's a nice OS, I like it better than Vista, but it's not going to speed up your computer.

  • Like others said, don't try to save money on memory in your computer.

Memory isn't that expensive these days anyway, look for a computer with a lot of RAM memory.

Alternatively, get a Mac. They are more expensive than PCs but you won't regret one :)

  • You don't want to install Windows 7 in an attempt to speed-up your computer.  If you're not ready to buy another laptop just yet, then I would spend some $$$ investing in some do-it-yourself software to tune-up and clean-up your own computer.  Or I can do it for you and do it remotely as you watch and/or chat with me (optional).  I do this all the time for family, friends, and customers.  I have a complete computer tune-up and deep clean-up package for only $59.00.  The Geek Squad charges over $135.00 for this service and you must take your computer to them.  Check me out!!!  http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Remote-Geek/287247694635121

    Thanks,
