pain after tooth filling -- how long?

Someone asked this question a couple months ago and I thought it was crazy that they were having tooth pain after a filling. I've never experienced that, until now.

My tooth still hurts about 4 weeks after I had a filling that had cracked, replaced.

I did a follow up at the dentist last week and they did another x-ray and they said it looks fine. They also checked my bite and it was good.

They told me that because it was a deep filling that it could take 6-8 months for the pain to go away.

They gave me a tube of calcium like fortifier that I place on my tooth nightly before I put in my aligners (Invisalign trays).

The pain I get from drinking/eating something cold is probably a 8 out of 10. Cross eyes type pain. I still can't eat anything that is hard because it "zaps" my tooth with pain. Soft foods don't bother it.

Right now, my tooth is hurting. It's a zinging feeling and it's on a scale of 5 out of 10.

Do you have experience with deep fillings? Is this normal? Time for a second opinion?

Re: pain after tooth filling -- how long?

  • I'd go back. DH had a filling that was giving him pain and when a new dentist took a look they found the filling was done incorrectly. They tried to drill it out and refill it correctly but they had too drill too much and he was in even more pain. He ended up having a root canal and a cap put in.

  • I had an onlay, which is like a baby crown, done in June. I had pain with drinking and eating for about 6 months. Some weeks it was better than others and certain things made it worse than other. But it did finally go away right after Christmas time. I did notice that then I went to the dentist last and she poked near it it still hurt but I think that will be normal for a while.

I would say if it gets progressively worst I would let your dentist know.

I'm starting to worry that this is what happened.

I've put in a call to my current dentist to ask, again, if I should be soon. I told the receptionist that if I need a root canal I want to get it over with than to be in pain for weeks and weeks to find out that I do indeed need one.

They told me I can apply the MI Paste Plus stuff several times a day to help infuse the tooth with the calcium phosphate and something else about tubuals.
