which job would you choose? please help me decide!

I am looking at returing to work after a big move and some time spent finishing up a degree. There are currently two jobs available in my field that might work and I am having a hard time deciding what to do. Here are my options:

Position #1: 3/4 time, in a larger office (7 staff), would be position #2, in charge of one area of company's work. Has the advantage of working as part of a team, and of not being ultimately responsible. Job search is going to begin next month, hoping to have someone in place before May. The person who is #1 is a nice guy, a few years younger than me. I have more experience and qualifications than he does, but am not looking for a full-time job (although I've held the equivalent position to his before).

Position #2: 1/2 time, small office (3 staff), would be position #1. In charge of everything. Has the advantage of greater flexibility and more challenging work. Job search is on right now and they need someone ASAP. I have done this same job before, including in much larger offices.

benefits are basically the same, salary is essentially at same level but prorated so 3/4 time pays more than 1/2 time (1/2 time job does pay a bit more but overall comp is hgher with bigger job).

I have 2 small children and a DH who works a lot, so I am not looking for full time, I am looking for flexibility and had expected to take on 1/2-3/4 time, so both of these jobs fit what I am looking for. Commute is pretty much identical between the two and I'm finding it hard to decide what to do.

Because of the timing of the job searches, I need to decide if I want to go for #2 or not. I cannot just apply for the first available opening and then back out because the second one is more appealing. I work in nonprofit admin and it's a small community around here. My reputation is important. Also, my qualifications and circumstances mean that I am almost certainly going  to be the strongest candidate for either job. Since there's a very good likelihood that I would get the job, I can't just apply to see what happens - if I apply, I need to be serious about potentially accepting the job.

So, what to do? Apply for the 1/2 time position? or wait for 3/4 time? Any advice on how to choose? And are there any factors I'm not looking at that might help me make a decision?

Thank you so much for any insights!

  • Apply to both. Interview and see what kind of fit each would be. Take what looks good.

There is no guarantee you're going to get hired, sorry. And it sounds like both would offer the flexibility you'd want.

  • I would apply for both, personally.... there's no surety you'll get the job.

Or if you're determined to only apply for one, is there something particularly appealing about one or the other? I don't know how nonprofit admin works, so is there a particular area/company/something that one offers exposure to that the other doesn't?

    I'm fabulous.
  • Apply for both. What if one decides not to interview you? At least you have the possibility of the other one.

Say you are invited to interview for both. Great! Go through the interview process.  Maybe one decides not to offer you the position.  Again, you have the possibility of the other one.

If you end up with two offers, then weigh the options you've laid out.  Since you have kids, also ask about the flexibility if one is sick, or school functions, etc.

    Good luck!

  • Seriously- there are no guarentees.  Apply for both - see what response you get. APPLYING for a job and then turning it down isn't the same thing as accepting an offer then backing out, which you seem to be equating this to!

This, all of it. One of them might also be a better 'personality' fit for you.

Something else to think about - do you want/need to be #1?

With your comments about having more quals and experience than the guy that you'd be reporting to #1, and the commentary on definitely being the strongest candidate available, I'm wondering -- no flaming -- if you would be better suited on the surface for #2 (i.e., you might struggle with reporting into someone who you saw as being less experienced.)

No, because the Lakers admiral accept a history of authoritative astute abstract picks and trades, abrogation the aggregation in position to balance bound from setbacks.

To be fair, the Clippers did abstract a approaching Hall of Famer in 1981: Tony Gwynn, who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1983, the Clippers called Byron Scott, again traded him to the Lakers.
