Pet friendly vacations on the East coast?

We're looking for a pet friendly vacation to take this summer, sometime in June or July. We're open to beachy, outdoorsy, city, camping, cabins...pretty much anything. We've stayed at tons of pet friendly hotels, so I'm sure we could find one easily wherever we go - but we'd like to be able to have activities to do with our dog, instead of leaving her in the kennel (not much of a vacation for her!).

We are thinking camping or cabin trip, however a dog friendly city could be good too. Similarly , a dog friendly beach house would be great!

We're located in Pittsburgh, PA and are looking for something within driving distance. We'd prefer not to go north - no Niagara Falls.

If any of you guys have stayed at any dog friendly places, please recommend! The cabins and beach houses I find online that are beach friendly haven't been great yet.

Thanks!

Re: Pet friendly vacations on the East coast?

  • The Outer Banks has some pet-friendly rentals.
  • On/Off season I take my pooch to LBI its not superduper pet friendly but there are 2 dog beaches on the island that I know of and 3 pet stores. Lo seems to like it.

The benefit to off season is there is no restrictions on dogs on the beach.

  • Check out Timber Tops cabins in Gatlinburg.  They have a lot of pet friendly cabins.  We love taking our dog with us!
  • It's about a 3 hour drive, but if you're looking for camping/cabins, you might like Berkely Springs, VW.  It's very small town, but you can rent pet-friendly cabins, there's hiking, kayaking on the Potomac River, and a few local places to eat if you don't want to cook.  Depending on whether your dogs like swimming you could bring them to the Potomac, it was pretty shallow and slow moving when we went.

It may not be what you're looking for, but the cabin we stayed at was clean (our main criteria) and we enjoyed it: http://www.berkeleyspringscottagerentals.com/cottage.asp?code=CC

  • The area of St. Michael's MD has many pet friendly rentals.  I go through Eastern Shore Vacation Rentals. They are wonderful to work with and have many options in terms of house size, pools, pet friendly, kayaks, etc. My vacation is already booked for June.  I hope Dixie likes it as much as Hanna did.

  • We love to take Zoey to the beach during the summer. Oak Island, NC has dog friendly beaches year round. There are lots of options for pet friendly rentals around that area, too. H and I love Oak Island....but its even better since we can bring Zoey along with us and not have to leave her at the house all day....she can go to the beach with us, too.
  • Thanks so much for the replies everyone!

It's good to get recommendations, because a lot of the pet friendly places we find online just aren't as nice as the non pet friendly. We've had good luck with hotels, but our girl whines when we first leave (while she is in the kennel), and although we've never had any complaints, I'm always worried like crazy the whole time we're gone.

  • I don't have advice for heading south (we usually go to VT or Maine for our dog friendly vacas), but I will say that we've had a ton of luck renting dog-friendly accomodations from VRBO. For the price of a hotel room, you get a condo or a single family house, a yard, and a kitchen/fridge/etc. We travel with our two, and often a friend and his dog (or my parents and thier dogs) as well - it's nice because they can all stay together too, and we're more comfortable letting them hang out in a house if we go out to dinner - and easier to have dinner in if we want to chill with them.

I'm writing the rest of these recommendations down though!

  • It is north of you, but we are renting a dog-friendly house on Martha's Vineyard this season.  The Cape and the Islands make wonderful summer getaways.

  • The Cape is beautiful, but most of the beaches do not allow dogs during high season (which runs the entire summer into the fall) except after 5 pm, so that's something to consider.

It would be a very long drive for you, but we just went to the White Mountains in New Hampshire last fall.  We rented a house and brought the dogs.  There was tons of great walking/hiking.  It's a very outdoorsy place.
