Event Hair Help (PIP)

I have to attend an awards banquet next Saturday. It's a black tie event, so I should try to look semi-fancy, I s'pose. I am re-wearing a jumpsuit I wore to H's Christmas party last year (see below), but I have no idea what to do with my hair. I called around to a few hair salons, and they're either booked up or charge way more than I'd be willing to pay for a one-night thing.

Anyway, I've had very short hair most of my adult life, and I don't really know what to do with this short bob I've got going on now. Ideally, I'd either figure out how to fake an up-do of some sort (photo below), or I'd figure out how to do lose waves (see below). Do any of you have any tips for either of these hairdos? Would I achieve waves using a curling iron/straightener, or some sort of rollers? I'm clueless, please help.

Re: Event Hair Help (PIP)

  • I would use a curling iron for the wavy looks, but you could use a flat iron to do it as well.

How much are you willing to pay if you went to a stylist? Do you have a friend who could help you do an updo at home?

  • I'd be willing to pay up to $40, but I was getting quotes more in the neighborhood of $75. I don't really know anyone that knows how to do any sort of updo. I did find this tutorial online, so I'm considering trying that out.

  • Try the Velvet Monkey Salon.. I know theirs are way cheaper than $75.

I like the wavy looks. Those are adorable. :)

  • I am sort of feeling like an idiot for posting this now.

I busted out the old curling iron I haven't used in a few years, took like 20 minutes, and wound up with the below (sorry for the poor photo quality). I'll probably amp it up a little and do it with bangs next weekend, but I think it'll suffice.

  • I would do a little more curl than wave I think, but it looks great!

    Agreed!

  • Just trying to be helpful here...what event are you going to? If it is black tie that jumpsuit, although very cute, is not appropriate.
  • @Puppy - Really? I thought the jumpsuit was pretty formal. Either way, it's an award show and most people go formal, but some men wear jeans, and some women wear pants. Maybe "cocktail attire" is a more appropriate label. IT'S FANCY, okay?

    image" width="250">
  • Eh, I think your pants outfit would be fine...I'd wear it and not think twice about it (which may or may not ease your mind, ha!) It sounds like you've got the best idea of what attire is appropriate for your shindig anyway.
  • Yeah, I am puzzled, though. I looked at the jumpsuit when I bought it as something pretty formal. It's long, it's black, it's super elegant (imo). I would never think of it as anything close to casual, just because it's pants.
