I know this is kind of random ... but ...

What is your preference in flooring for bedrooms? Carpet? Hardwood? Something else? Why?

Hardwood with area rugs by the sides of the bed. I think they look more polished and warm than carpet or tile. Wood, depending on what you put on it, doesn't off-gass like carpet. It's also easier to dog fur and get rid of allergens. And carpet just skeeves me out.

Carpet. I think it's because I grew up with it and dislike walking around on cold floors in the morning.

Preference would be hardwood with rugs, however it's not what we have. Our main floor is original hardwood so those two bedrooms have rugs, but when we bought our house we carpeted the upstairs master bedroom. At the time it was the cheapest option, and I'm still okay with the carpet, but I'm sure hardwood would look better.

Ditto all of this.

It we do ever have carpet it will be a super low pile. I really dislike thick fluffy carpet that shows vacuum tracks. Most likely we'll have wood or tile everywhere with rugs or Flor tiles.

Carpet. I walk around barefoot too much, but my feet get cold pretty quick so I like having the carpet to keep my feet warm.

I'm doing my flooring this weekend. We will be having hardwood in the whole house. Found an AWESOME sale on it. Living room is first this weekend and I already have the new sub flooring in! With my dog that sheds everywhere, hardwood is easier to deal with.

Carpet only because I don't like touching cold floors in the morning. I prefer hardwood otherwise.

I think I would prefer hardwood for many of the reasons listed above, but I've only ever had carpet in my bedroom so I'm not totally sure.

Our entire upstairs has carpet - all 4 bedrooms. It's not in the greatest shape, mostly in the master bedroom and hallways where there's the most traffic. I would like to get rid of the worn carpet, and am debating putting hardwood in instead.

Here are two follow-up questions:

1. If there are hardwoods on the entire main floor of our house, and we replaced the carpets upstairs with hardwood ... do the upstairs hardwoods have to exactly match the main floor hardwoods?

We have Brazilian tigerwood on the main floor of the house (put in by former owners), but I know it's pretty expensive. Brazilian cherry would be a fairly close match and cheaper than tigerwood. Could we get by with using cherry upstairs?

2. Would it be really weird to have hardwoods in just the master and hallways, and keep carpet in the other 3 bedrooms upstairs? The carpet in the other 3 rooms is still in pretty good shape as those rooms are used a lot less. It seems silly to rip out perfectly good carpet. Then again, that carpet will eventually need replacing in the future, and if we ever want hardwoods in those rooms, we should do the entire upstairs at one time so it all matches. WWYD?

My preference is hardwood all around except in the bathroom and kitchen... Simple reason - if you've got kids or pets, the "3 P's" (pee, poo, and puke) are FAR easier to clean up out of hardwood without staining than they are from carpet... I can always wash a rug or grab a scrub bucket.. I've got to rent or borrow a carpet cleaner and by the time that happens it's a question whether the stain is coming out...

I don't think the wood upstairs would have to match the wood downstairs but I think it would need to complement each other. My parents have Brazilian Cherry stained very dark in most of the main level and then light oak in their porch. The porch is on the same level but you have to step down to get in there. It's not the same color or type of wood but I think it looks fine.

I would ask the wood installation people about the second question. As far as matching goes, it is possible. We had to have a bunch of boards replaced and they were able to match new boards perfectly with the original floor from 50 years ago. We had to have the whole thing refinished anyway so we didn't have to worry about the color matching. However, when they replaced the boards, they had to rip the damaged ones in the dining room and some good ones in the hallway to get the board seams to alternate and look normal.
