F*cking for real

I got an allergy test today....and my biggest reaction was to cats. Yep, I'm allergic to cats. The doctor also thinks with my history that I have asthma, which is why I get bronchitis and pneumonia more often than is normal. He put me on another allergy med and have me an inhaler for the asthma. He's hoping that controlling the asthma will help enough, since getting rid of the cats isnt an option. Ugh, why cats?!

I'm also allergic to dogs, cattle, and horses. Guess my dreams of being a cattle rancher will never come true.

Re: F*cking for real

  • That sucks :( I used to be highly allergic to cats as well. Washing them (or getting them groomed) helps a lot. And I'm surprised constant exposure hasn't lessened your reaction to them. I hope you start to feel better
  • Hope you feel better!

On a side note - I never knew you could be allergic to cattle! Are you allergic to beef or their "fur"?

  • I'm assuming it's their dander. I don't have negative reactions to eating beef. Although for awhile steak made me sick, but that's because I stopped eating it for a few years.
  • i'm so sorry! that's like my worst nightmare. when i got allergy tested i willed myself not to be allergic to cats. i literally tested positive for dogs (although i really don't have a reaction to dogs), horses and every other animal hair there was EXCEPT cats. the doctor wasn't convinced. he said you're basically always allergic to all of them. i said, nope, can't be. i have four cats. i refuse. so he did a special test just for cats and i was negative again. i was so relieved.

do you find it's worse when you have your face right up to them, or when they sleep on your pillow? i know some people wash their hands right after handling them and avoid giving them kisses and basically putting their face up to them. they also don't let them near their bed.

i know some people are allergic to long haired cats and not short, and vice versa. i think it's their saliva.

    good luck - that's rough!

Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Yep, the allergen is in their saliva. Sunny (the long haired one) is more hypoallergenic than Herc just because of her breed. If their fur gets in my nose it gets itchy, but I'm not constantly having allergy symptoms. They sleep in the bed with me, not sure if that's going to change. The doctor thinks its more a problem because I'm sick more than most people. So the constant exposure is lowering my immune system.

  • Wow!!! That really sucks!!

Yup I was surprised to learn this when I got allergy tested. My cat licks me all the time and it doesn't bother me at all.

I'm allergic to dogs, cats, and horses. I am SEVERELY allergic to every grass and most trees. Yet my entire life I live with all of the above. I find that my body builds a specific immune response to the animals I am around on a daily basis. However if I got over to my mom's I nearly die. Even though I use to live there with those animals. It should be interesting when I start horseback riding again this summer.

What type of cocktail did they put you on? I have to say I LOVE Singulair. I have found that in the winter time I can get buy on that alone. If I'm going to someones house who has pets I take they Xyzal. Once the grasses and trees come back I have to go back on on the Omanris and Pat-A-Day as well.

  • Zyrtec, Nasonex, and Singulair for the allergies. Flovent and Albuterol for the asthma.
  • Aww Im sorry. H is allergic to our kitty too. When we moved in together I had 3 cats and H almost died on Thanksgiving he couldnt breathe. We had to send my childhood cat to live with my parents and unfortuneatly the other passed a few months later =( He just doesnt interact with the cat and he cant be in our bedroom. I love sleeping with kitty but I love my husband more so I sacrifice hehe. I hope you can work something out. I know what you mean, theyre part of your FAMILY. You cant give them up.

You really wanted to be a cattle rancher?

  • No, I was in a sarcastic mood. I did want to buy a baby calf at the county fair though.
  • I thought it would be cool, I just had a hard time believing it. HA

  • If any of us were allergic, I wouldn't hesitate to get rid of animals. Asthma is no joke.
