This might be pretty obvious, but it's the 1st time for me
How do you look for an apartment to rent? I've never had to do that in the US and I have no clue. Except driving around town and looking for "NOW RENTING" signs.
There is a potential buyer for my house and it's making me so anxious, sad, scared... I love my house!
Re: This might be pretty obvious, but it's the 1st time for me
Craigslist is probably the place I got to most, as it's a mix of privately listed as well as apartment complexes.
Rent.com is another, but it's just for apartment complexes.
GL!
Padmapper.com is a really cool site to use if you are looking for a rental in a specific area. You can even view a picture of the rental via maps.
Ooh, I forgot about padmapper. Love that site!
i second checking out apartmentratings.com. they also have a pretty big list of apartments listed by city.
i found my apartment on apartments.com i think.
good luck!
many apartments for rent aren't advertised at all (so i have heard). so, one way of looking, in addition to online, is to physically go to the neighbourhood that you are eyeing and walk/drive around looking for signs. this is especially true for urban areas, obv.
I agree with Tabermac. I did a ton of research using Craig's List and local forums (city forums, viewing threads which discussed desirable neighborhoods/areas), but once I found the area I wanted to live in, I learned the best way to land an apartment there was to work with one of two property management companies which manage a bunch of properties there, or to drive around until you see something you like, call the number on the sign and ask questions (rent, utilities, pet, size, deposit, move-in date, when can I see it?). I ended up finding my place, which I LOVE, because I happened to be walking by a For Rent sign as the current occupant was leaving.
Moving out on your own is a HUGE pain and a ton of stress, but it can be done. And then you get to just start over and have a place all to yourself that's just for you, and it's wonderful.
Moving was a pain. I had horrible horrible luck with craigslist and decided to pay to sign up for a local apartment/ rental site in LA called westsiderentals. I would imagine most big cities have something like this. I still did a lot of driving, and I did call beforehand to see if they were even willing to consider dogs. I have 2 55lb+ pups, and some places just flat out said "no" so at least I saved time not driving there. Have an idea about where you want to live, and get to know the neighborhood, so you can get a sense of where places are before having to go there. I knew I didn't want to live north of a certain street, because the neighborhood changes for the worse quickly.
I found my apartment via Craigslist. I know people who have also had good luck with hotpads.com as well.
GL!
