Holy fertile myrtle, batman!

I just found out that an acquaintance of mine is pregnant, despite wearing the patch (or the ring, I can't remember what she said) AND using a condom, which had no visible signs of malfunction.

And yes, I 1000% believe her, she has no reason to lie.  She has a baby getting ready to turn 1, and had a surprise pregnancy with birth control about 4 months ago which ended in miscarriage, which is why they were also using condoms. Now it's going to be sterilization for one of them, because she did NOT want any more children.

I trust no birth control anymore. I had a Paragard IUD for 4 years and it completely dislodged sometime between one yearly gyn appointment and the next, leaving me completely unprotected for up to a year. And I got pregnant on the pill once with perfect usage (ended in miscarriage).

Things like this seem to be happening more and more lately (or people are just talking about it more, idk). It's such a scary thought.

Re: Holy fertile myrtle, batman!

  • She must be having sleep sex with her husband.

I can see hormonal birth control failing, but if she were properly using condoms (thereby preventing sperm from entering her vagina), she could not get pregnant.  They are doing something wrong -- fooling around before putting the condom on, using expired condoms or not removing his condom wrapped penis properly from her vagina.  Unless his sperm crawls across the sheets at night to get to her eggs, something is off in this tale.

  • Ugh, scary!  My BCP were part of the batch that got recalled, but BF has been snipped, thankfully, so no oopsies.
  • Well, she also metabolizes birth control pills too fast, apparently, which she found out with her first kid. She's an anomaly for sure. It's entirely possible that the hormones in the patch or ring weren't getting into properly either. And couldn't there be minuscule tears in a condom that aren't readily seen while taking it off in the dark? This woman is as honest as the day is long, so I honestly think its just a one in a million freak of nature thing. Stranger things have happened.
  • The same thing happened with someone I know.  I fully believe it can happen.  And it scares the snot out of me.
