Neighbor vent!

Ugh, our neighbors want to start an HOA... We are 9 townhouses with veryityle shared space. I think the people that live in the end units are trying to say we are responsible for their side yards. I don't agree. Am I wrong? Also the front units have lawn outside of their fence. Would you consider this community lawn? I can't use it so I don't know...

This is too slow to keep typing!!

Re: Neighbor vent!

  • if it's only 9 houses, i'd fight it. how big is the side-yards? my parents live in a 100+ homes community w/o an HOA...there's an entrance area with a sign, etc...and that, i honestly have no idea who maintains it! but some people come around every few years asking for donations. since there's only 9 houses, i think you can get away with doing donations/volunteers to maintain that side yard.

the truth is, HOA's (if ran well) are generally helpful and can increase property values--but they are a lot of hassle, and with 9 homes and little shared space, i don't think it's worth it.

HOA's can limit architectural changes (no one can pain their house pink, or build an ugly extension), can enforce yard maintenance, parking enforcement, holiday decorations, limit amount of renters...... seriously, with a small community, it's not worth it. but if it's bigger, and problems can arise, it's worth it.

  • I maintain the easement outside the fence for my property, but not my neighbors' side yards or easement areas.  There are perks to living on the corner, and drawbacks, and those both fall within the realm of the person who lives there, not their neighbors.

  • That stinks. I hate neighborhood drama. I'm actually suprised you aren't already in an HOA. There are positives and negatives as Jennlin stated. I don't have much to add, but good luck.

  • Earlier I tried to compromise and say we will all maintain the side yard next to the driveway and we could use it to keep garbage cans. The people who live there vetoed it but now want us to maintain the yards.

We have an email group and talk. We have split expenses before. I just don't get bringing in a 3rd party to do this...

And they just started complaining about my cat =(

  • Unless their side yard become communal space, I don't think you need to help pay for it.

Personally, I hate my HOA and I think they're a good for nothing POS organization. When we move we're really going to try and find a place without an HOA.

  • What does your cat do that they could possibly care about?

  • One neighbor said he was putting chicken wire down to keep the cats out.

I might have emailed them and said I would help any neighbor put it down if they wanted but I won't keep my cat inside... They made me b!tchy!

  • Just tell them no, that you don't want to be part of a HOA. They can't make you...

  • haha, I'm on our HOA board, so I don't hate it Smile.

I don't like HOA's for single family developments, but definitely think they're useful and valuable for townhome complexes. It's nice to actually have a set of rules that are fairly applied, that way you don't have to worry about neighbors complaining about certain things, etc.
