*Lisa* and others who have big bubbas

So Z went in for his 2 year check-up and the boy is a beast, he always has been, is Collin still considered big, or is he evening out?

The thing is I never feel like Zac is fat - just big, strong, solid, muscular and slightly chubby.

Anyway, he weighed in "off the charts" at 35.6 pounds @ 2 years. And the doctor, while she didn't act too concerned, she certainly made a comment about watching that it doesn't become a problem.

The other thing is, he eats relatively well and those were her suggestions, cut out juices (he doesn't drink juice), more fruits and veggies (I feel like he eats plenty of these) ... blah blah blah.

Curious where you all stand, and how you feel about baby watching your kids weight. I certainly come from a position where I want a healthy Zac, and don't want him to experience things I may have by being "bigger" growing up.

  • Collin is weighing in at about 28 pounds now. Once he started moving his weight gain slowed significantly. I can't for the life of me think of his height (bad mommy) but I know he is short for his age. As long he is eating healthily, I wouldn't worry too much. I looked at your pics from yesterday and at no point did I think "OMG he is SO big". Well I mean he is so big, but you know what I mean Smile

  • Jack weighs more, and is just a hair shorter, then his friend Tim, who is 13 months older than he is.

Jack weighs 34.6 pounds (I know this b/c he likes to jump on my scale anytime that I do). And I believe he is 36 inches tall? But don't quote me on that. When we went for his 2 year old well visit, he was somewhere between 95th % and off the charts for both height and weight. But, the dr was not concerned, b/c that is always where he has been. As long as Zac's growth has stay consistent, and he is eating decent, and runs/plays/moves around a lot - then I wouldn't worry.

I love my big boy =)

And, Carter just had his 2 month visit, and homeboy is just under 15 pounds, and 24 inches long I believe? He is just as big as Jack was at that age. I grow them big!

  • Z had always been 50% for height and 90-95% for weight, until this check-up he was 75% for height and "off the charts" for weight - which if anything should make me feel better.

I always joke that they boy never had a chance to be small, not when e came out at 10 pounds.

I agree, he's very active and eats a good balance. It just had me stressing a little bit yesterday. Like maybe I do have my blinders on because I'm his mother, and I don't see it.

  • We also got the BMI talk from our pedi at our last visit.  Natalie is 36 inches tall and weighs 31 pounds.  Apparently that puts her at the borderline for a high BMI.  She also told me to cut out any juices/ sodas (we don't do them anyway), make sure she's eating right, no fast food, etc.  Which I feel, like you, we have done all along.  Doc says it's because she still has 2 year old baby fat on a 3 year old frame, if that makes sense.

At some point, genetics just take over.  If you know you're doing your part, don't feel bad.  He's just a sturdy kid and that's ok because it's completely related to his build and not at all related to external factors.  Same with Natalie-- Walt is 6'4 and I hardly expected to have a short child with him since I am no shorty myself.  You're doing just fine so don't worry about it at all.  I honestly think one of the most important factors to a child growing up healthy is by seeing excellent food and exercise routines being modeled by the parents, and you certainly do that.

And while we're at it, I'll confess that I think standard BMI calculations are total bunk because they do not factor in someone's frame, bone density, etc.

  • Its so funny cause Abby was always a skinny-minny... at her 3yr checkup she weighed in at 31 lbs and is 38.5 in tall.  The twins have been the exact opposite of her.  They havent been as tall and are way heavier!  I hate all teh comments about how big they are!  At their 1yr visit they were 28.13 and 26.15 lbs.  Then about 2 months later when they were sick they weighed in at 27.5 and 25.6.. so they both lost 1.5lbs!  I was actually pleased!  They, like Zac just seem solid!!  They don't have any rolls, they are just solid!  I can tell they are starting to thin out and the doctor has never said anything.  Blah it stinks having bigger kids, when you yourself have always had weight issues!!!
  • I never look at Zac and think he is heavy. I think he looks perfectly adorable. That is my medical opinion. Adorable. Haha.

  • It's interesting reading all of these posts and the concerns over "big" kids as a mother of a LO on the other end of the spectrum.  It seems there are always concerns no matter what your child's size.  Everyone's LO's look adorable to me.

It makes me wonder where are the kids who are at the 50% for height and weight and question whether the percentiles arejust meant to induce stress for parents.  (And yes, I've looked at both the CDC and WHO percentiles.)

I do think that the percentiles are total bunk.  Charlie is considered 50% across the board.  However, in his daycare he is the smallest in his class.  He also has been wearing 2T clothes since the beginning of the fall and he was only 16 months at the time.  What sense does that make?

  • Cullen is 19 pounds at almost 8 months and every.single.person that meets him mentions something about how "hefty" (or some other crafty word) he is.  I just tell them that he is well nourished.  He is in the 75% for weight and less than 50% for his height.  Our doc doesnt seem really concerned about it yet and I wouldnt be concerned about Zac either...he is healthy and not eating McD's and having pop every day, so I think you are good.

  • Landon was in the 95%ile for weight and 35% for height at his last check up. He is now 24 pounds, and has been that weight for almost 1.5 months. Now that he's walking and off formula, his growth is slowing.

I know he's a year younger than Z, but our pedi has never been concerned. Landon has always been the biggest baby in his room, and he loves to eat! I also make sure he gets a fruit/veggie/carb/protein with most meals, and he barely gets any juice... maybe 2oz a day that is diluted with mostly water.
