For our honeymoon in April, we are heading to St Martin/St Maartin in the Caribbean for one week! Does anyone have any helpful hints or tips? Or suggestions on what we should do or where we should eat? We aren't sure if renting a car is needed.
Thanks!
Re: St Martin/St Maartin
I stayed at the Westin Dawn Beach right after it opened. I did not rent a car, but I also didn't venture out every day. I did eat out twice- Taloula Mango's in Philipsburg and Cherie's. Cherie's has some entertainment and is loud. We went with a group of women we met at the resort (It was a vacation with my mom) and they were out to have a good time, unwind, and dance. Taloula's looks out at the bay and had very good pina coladas! We also did a bit of shopping, but the best thing we did was take a ferry to Anguilla for the day. We had a cab drop us off at Shoal Bay East. Gorgeous water, soft white sand, and barely anyone there (July). There was a small restaurant along the beach where we were sitting that also rents out chairs. Don't remember the name, but had a fantastic day. You can catch the ferry on the French side.
HTH!
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
We were just there for a couple of weeks in January. You will want to rent a car if you plan on exploring the island. There is a lot to see and it is the best way to get around.
Some Suggestions:
-Bar hop on Orient Beach during the day
- Eat at a nice restaurant in Grand Case - best food on the island (mostly French but there is other cuisine as well). Go there on a Tuesday night, when they close off the main street for Carnaval (they pretty much celebrate it year-round).
- Watch the planes take off/land on Maho Beach
- Make the trip out to Happy Bay for the day
- Eat at Pineapple Petes or Skipjacks in Simpson Bay
- Marigot also has some great food.
- Philipsburg for gambling.
- We found that the 'duty-free' shopping in Philipsburg isn't really worth it unless you are interested in jewelery. Everything else (pricewise) seemed pretty close to what you would pay at home. If you do go there - try to find out when cruise ships aren't in port - you will get better prices on those days.
If you're in the Phillipsburg area, eat at Chesterfields one night. It's open air and the ambiance and food are both wonderful.
Make your way down to the Sunset Bar on Maho beach for lunch. It's a bar, so they have burgers and sandwiches, but you'll be about 50 yards from landing aircraft. We were there for about an hour, and saw 4 huge planes land, so they come in pretty frequently.
Also check out www.jojunietours.com, and give him a call one day. He'll take you around the whole island for several hours, with an open bar along the way (You can drink in vehicles in St. Martin). He also brings you to the sunset bar, Marigot, Orient Bay, and other places that have been mentioned.
