dinner rec for Oahu??

Hi,

We are headed to Oahu March 23.  The 24th is our 5th anniversary and are looking for somewhere special to celebrate.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • The best fine dining special occasion restaurant IMO is Chef Mavro, but it's pricey.  I've walked it from Waikiki if that's where you're staying, but it's not a quick walk.

Is there some specific food type you're looking for?

  • We enjoyed our dinner at the Beach House at the Moana Surfrider Hotel. It has pretty views (the seating is outside) and good food.

We also liked Sarento's on the 30th floor of the Ilikai Hotel (neat ride up an outside glass elevator to get there). It's Italian food; H had the ahi tuna with risotto and it was to-die for, and I normally don't even like ahi tuna. The views are beautiful as well from up on the 30th floor.

I can't believe you didn't suggest the cheesecake factory!!!!

  • We went to La Mer at the Halekulani for our 5th anniversary dinner.  Fantastic food, beautiful view, impeccable service - and I swear Hideki Matsui was sitting at the table next to us.
  • Another vote for La Mer. We ate there for our first anniversary and everything was great--the food, the view, the service--and they really took care of us, giving us complimentary glasses of champagne and chocolates to take home.

  • My favorite upscale restaurants on Oahu are 3660 On the Rise and Alan Wong's. You'll need a car to get to both of them.
  • OP, if you can get decent Italian food where you are, skip Sarento's.  It's very good by Oahu standards, and the view can't be beat, but compared to great Italian I've had elsewhere, it's pretty middle of the road.  I even used to live in the Sarento's building, and I was never tempted to go back again except for happy hour.

No cheesecake factory!!!!  Only Canadian and Japanese tourists are allowed to go, and not for special occasions.  Also on the banned list, with no exceptions, is Red Lobster and Outback.  Support local business!

La Mer has been on my list to try (even though it's not locally owned), so thanks for reminding me, PPs.  It's a beautiful setting.  If you don't go there, at least go to happy hour at house without a key which is basically on the same patio as la mer.  Bonus: it's the only place we've found that will make a painkiller.

  • DH and I went to Top of Waikiki for dinner one night on our trip last year.  It's a rotating restaurant and we went around sunset.  It was pretty and the food was good.  Our service was so-so, but I think that was an issue with our particular waiter and not indicative of the restaurant's service as a whole.  If you read about the sunset specials and plan to partake....be sure to sit in the bar area.  That's the only place you'll get the deals.  We also went to Maui on that trip and went to Roy's there.  I know they have one on Oahu as well.  If you've never been to one, I suggest it for sure.  It was the best meal of our whole trip...so yummy!
  • There is a Roy's in Waikiki.  There's also one in Hawaii Kai.  The one in Waikiki is pretty much directly across from Halekulani.  It has an outside bar that has drawn us to it for a late night drink and chocolate souffle... more than once :)

But for a special occasion, I think the waterfront location of halekulani is much nicer.

dollfinn, did you remember if you had the redhead male server at top of waikiki? He's an ass.  He's been there the last two times I've been (they have a late night happy hour), and he is probably the worst server I've ever encountered.

  • I think he had black hair.  Oh man, maybe they do just have bad servers!  Well DH and I thought we were going for the sunset specials...apps and drinks. So that's what we were in the mood for. The waiter told us we would have to be sitting at the bar for that. We had just seen 2 tables move to the bar from his section so we told him we'd stay so he didn't lose another table.  (he was still nice at this point.)  after looking at the whole menu, we still just wanted apps. We ordered like 3...and several drinks. All at menu price since we weren't at the bar...so we were still spending a good amount!  But when we ordered, he had such an attitude. I guess bc no entrees...less tip?  He tried to guilt us into ordering more.  We didn't see him again until we flagged him down to give us the check...which took forever.
  • Also, we did go to that cheesecake factory on Waikiki.....ridiiiiiculously packed. Not even just the wait....they have the tables on top of each other in there!  I was afraid to get up for the restroom bc my booty would be moving stuff around on the next table as I try to squeeze by!  Haha
