Re: Mums Bumps & BBTs

  • I've officially gotten the diagnosis from my gall bladder u/s that I've got multiple small gall stones. I'm taking medication that should dissolve them, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works. Since the wall of my gall bladder still looks healthy the Dr. would rather have me go this route and hopefully get rid of them, than me having surgery. So other than ending up in the emergency Sunday evening due to a prolonged attack, and getting a narcotic/nausea shot, which equals a very sore/tender butt cheek things are good.

I'm also on a special diet so that makes life some what miserable, but I'd rather do that than have another attack. This was my mistake Saturday evening because I ate something that I knew I should have avoided.

  • Ups: We go home in 43 days. Who's counting? I am. V gets tons of interaction with kids here, but I don't get much with adults WITHOUT V (which I know lots of us expats are facing) so I'm looking forward to handing her over to eager grandparents and visitnig with some of my friends/having a date with my husband on our own.

Downs: V is sick again. Not nearly as serious this time, but a fever of 101-102 for two days now and, more importantly, two nights. MY GOD THE NIGHTS. I am hoping tonight is better, I am so tired.

QOTD: I'll start talking to her about this when she gets to an age closer to when she'll ever be anywhere without an adult with her (me, DH or a relative/sitter) and I'll just be honest but try not to be too scary. What's more important, in my opinion, is talking about NON-stranger danger (though I won't use the word danger) since if she is to be abused it is more likely to be in the circle of people we know. My main plans are to emphasize her autonomy over her body and our unconditional love/trust for her so she can tell us anything. I don't feel paranoid about these issues, but I do feel more parents dont' want to consider that someone they know/love/trust would hurt their child adn therefore kind of mentally dismiss that possibility.

  • Ups: F.C. is getting very good at getting around, even outside in the snow. She?s getting good at manipulating things (zippers, drawers, etc.) to get them open and having a ball doing it.

Downs: She?s also working on climbing...she?s a monkey.

QOTD: I guess about two, right now she?s too young to understand, but I think when she?s about two I?ll explain that we don?t talk to strangers without mom?s permission and that MOm will never have her go with a stranger.

  • Ups: M suprised us and cut 4 molars last week. I had no idea. She's only got 6 front teeth, and although I thought thought the molars were moving around, explaining her extreme crankiness and and wanting to nurse ALL the time, it was such a relief to know it was them actually cutting thru. W is a sweetie. They play so nicely together it's finally starting to wear away at the remnants of the doubt about having a second.

Downs: Nursing/weaning is still such a struggle.

QOTW: Honestly, I couldn't have verbalised my thoughts on this any better.

I actually hate the stranger danger idea - it shows our kids that people we don't know are to be feared, when the vast majority of people are good. With W, we've started telling him to not go off with people we dont' know, and talking about how his body is his own, etc.

But it's all very low-key at the moment. He's just getting the idea of privacy, so I think he's slowly getting used to the idea that his body is his own.

But in practical terms, of how to approach this, it still seems a minefield of sayign the wrong thing and making him scared, or not saying enough and not explaining things...

  • Hi! Thanks for the list update, Mouse.

I've been better. What with the urgent translation and accompanying frustrations (see vent post) plus DD getting sick and DH still working a lot, I feel like I'm not getting anything done that I want/need to.

Ups: DD finally started kind of crawling. I had been trying to tell myself not to worry because she was behind most of the other May babies in that.

Downs: I think she caught a cold either from DH or from a boy at our playgroup last week. Either way, I had to get up about 10 times in the night because she was sleeping so poorly, and yesterday I had a really hard time working on my translation because she was so clingy.

QOTD: Not for a while, obviously, since she still can't understand what I say. I agree that it's important to talk about inappropriate behavior by anyone - strangers or not. In the first talk I think I'll plan to discuss how she shouldn't get into a car or go anywhere with anyone unless she asks me first and also try to communicate that she should come tell me if anyone touches her inappropriately (that will, of course, be explained in more detail so she understands).

  • Ups:  N is getting more used to the new childminder and the new place - she is taking hour and a half naps in a room with other kids which is new for her so this is great (first couple of days she'd only 45 mins the whole day!).  She is also getting over her chesty cough and is in much better form.  And she got at least 2 new teeth last week (which would have added to the sick crankyness) though she won't let us see them.  Very near to standing on her own now!

Downs: DH is going away on Saturday for the night so I'll be on my own... :-( But I can catch up on lots of girly tv and dvds - like Bridesmaids!

QOTD: Haven't really thought about this yet to be honest... she's only 11mths old

  • Ups: I'm pregnant!  It still hasn't quite sunk in.  I got my first beta results yesterday, which looked good, and now waiting for the second test today to make sure everything is progressing.  I feel great, with no symptoms so far aside from sore boobs.

Downs: Nothing really.  I'm a little disappointed that we have to wait until 3/13 for our first scan (I'm impatient and also curious to confirm how many are in there!), but DH is travelling for a few weeks and we really want him to be there.

  • Hi Mouse, can you please add me to the list? Due August 5th :)

Ups - Been feeling great! Asides from being tired quite ferquently, I have no other pregnancy symptoms. touch wood. And we are off to Marrakesh this weekend for babymoon #1!

Downs - DH has been out of town all week so I haven't been eating the healthiest in the evenings which disappoints me, and yet I still can't stop myself!

  • Mrs SC I've added you to the list, it'll show up next week!

Ups: DD is sitting up well now and is finished with the fussy part of teething, she's even done better sleeping the last two nights with `only one or two wakings.

Downs: I'm the last of my friends who have LO's E's age to still be BF and it's starting to sink in that they'll be going back to work soon :(

QOTW: I agree with Enid, it's not just strangers that they need to be aware of now, I really want to teach her that we will let her know if she should go with anyone but us and to teach her that her body is her's and other people shouldn't want to touch her in special places and that if they try she should tell us, even if it's uncle or aunty so and so. I want to start as soon as I can but try to do it in a way that she won't be scared of people too!

  • Ups: I had another ante-natal class today and did baby massage so hopefully this helps with baby girl's gassy issues.  I also met a bunch of nice Mums and we went for coffee afterwards.  One of my coworkers came to see me today too. To be honest, I'm worn out from socializing today but that's a nice thing.

Downs: She's been a bit fussier than usual the past few days and waking herself up multiple times at night.  I put her dummy back in and that seems to do the trick, but sleep would be much more peaceful if I didn't have to do that.

QOTD: I agree with everything Enid said.

  • I'm such a bad nestie friend. Forgive me ladies?

Congrats to all the new BFPs!  Sending you all lots of healthy baby vibes!

Ups: LOVE being a mom and finally getting the hang of it too!  Breastfeeding is amazing and I am really enjoying it.  A is growing up so fast.  He is a big boy and I love his little smiles and coos.  He loves talking to his birds on his bassinet in the morning.  That is what I wake up to everyday at 6 am.

Downs: He has just started pulling off/screaming at the breast during the middle of a feeding for the past few days.  I have no idea what is wrong.  He still does it when I try to switch sides too.  It is always way after my letdown so it isn't overactive letdown--any thoughts?

Really wish he'd start giving me more than 3 hours at night...it'll come I know, but I am ready for it already!

QOTD: Maybe around toddler time?  I don't know.  I think when he is interacting with people other than mom and dad.
