I adopted a 7 month old puppy from a shelter on Sunday. I started working with him on crate training and he goes in and eats fine. The problem is he also likes to use his crate as a potty. He seems to go potty in the crate or on his bed even if we have just been outside and he went. I tried haveing no soft stuff in the crate or haivng towels doens't seem to matter he seems to like to pee in in I'm tired of cleaning it already as it's a pain to climb in and clean. We have the hard plastic kind of crate if it matters. He is not having accidents in other parts of the house though (askide from the first night when we got Home)
Re: Dog peeing in crate
Couple of things...
1. The crate should only be big enough for him to stand up and turn around comfortably. If it's too big he can get far enough away from the pee/poop that it doesn't bother him and he'll keep going in there.
2. What are you using to clean accidents? An enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle is the only thing that truly eliminates the scent. If you're using something else, he can still smell it and thinks it ok to keep going in there.
3. How many potty breaks does he get? We take ours out every 20 - 30 minutes when we're potty training. The more chances they get to go outside the less chances to mess up by going inside.
1. He is 55 pounds not sure on the breeds they called him a newfoundland mix at the shelter. The crate is big but he hits his head on the next smaller size and couldn't turn around.
2. used simple green to clean up the mess where can you buy and enzymatic cleaner?
3. He has a ton of potty breaks, he has gone in the crate as soon as 5 min after coming in from a potty break and 30 min right before we were going to go out again. He did hold it the whole time I was gone on monday it was 2.5 hours, and he was just locked in the room with the crate door open.
Regarding enzymatic cleaners, you can buy Nature's Miracle from Amazon, PetCo, PetSmart, PetFoodDirect.com, and many other stores. I would just Google it and find a good price (or call your local pet supply store and find out if they have it so you can get it faster). It is imperative to clean up all accidents with an enzymatic cleaner so the puppy can't smell the pee - if he smells that he peed in his crate before, he will think it's an ok place to pee.
If you're having issues with him peeing after he goes out, I would suggest a couple things. First, are you taking him out on a leash and making sure he actual pees/poos? If not, I would start doing that. Walk him around until he goes, and then praise and reward like crazy. Second, I would tether him to you when you are in the house so you can keep a close eye on him for any signs he needs to go. Once you've cleaned his crate with the enzymatic cleaner, you can also crate him when you can't watch him closely.
