Re: Durango, CO
I briefly went to college in Durango. Definitely a cute, small town with good bars and restaurants and gorgeous scenery. I am pretty sure there the closest skiing is Silverton though, about an hour or so north.
ETA: Apparently I partied too much during those college times, there is Durango Mountain Resort and Purgatory.

I did the train to Silverton and was bored out of my freaking mind. It's like 3 hours on a hard wooden bench.
I can't personally speak for the skiing as I've only been there in summer, but friends of mine have made trips and love it. But, they're also hardcore back country skiers who did the beacon skiing in Silverton and Wolf Creek. My understanding is that Durango and Purgatory are excellent mountains, but check the trail maps to see difficulty level.
