Has anyone used
http://www.raileurope.com or a similar site to purchase rail tickets in advance? Is this the way to go, or are we better off buying them at the station in Italy?
Re: Italy Trains
just buy them when you get there. we generally just picked up tickets for our next trip while at the station. for example: we flew into rome so we just stopped at the station while en route to the spanish steps (or something like that, that trip was in 2008) to get our tickets to florence for a few days later. when we got to florence, we purchased our tickets to cinque terre, in cinque terre, purchased our tickets to venice. and you can book the day of, but that method worked well for us.

We just bought tickets at the station. If it was a city that we weren't planning to be in long, or we had a particular time that we wanted to be able to leave, we'd buy the departing ticket at the station as soon as we arrived. (Like in Venice, we were only staying one night, and wanted to get out at a certain time to catch a connecting train at Florence to Siena.)
The flexibility was nice, but it was early October and not especially busy tourist season.
I originally was going to book our Amsterdam to Paris train through raileurope.com and then realized it was cheaper to book directly from the train site (Thayls in our case). Raileurope charges an $18 shipping fee.
However, if you do consider booking through them, I suggest making an account, putting your tickets in your cart and then not purchasing them. I did this twice, forgetting about the tix, and within 5 days, both times, I received an email with a promo code for $25 off my forgotten cart items.
And, to echo pp's; SIL and BIL purchased their train tix in Italy in June directly at the station with no issues

oh! I'm the only one that did something different! :-)
DH and I were in Italy about 7 months ago. We had a relatively "set" schedule; we knew when we wanted to travel, etc. I think that it depends on when and where you're going - and what season. We went in the summer, and wanted to have a seat reservation and no worries about having a seat when we wanted to travel. We bought tickets in advance for transportation between cities.
I purchased tickets directly from http://www.trenitalia.com and took advantage of various promotions that they had going on (we got 1/2 price seats).
We also booked our first set of tickets using trenitalia's website before we left and then purchased the rest of the tickets when we go there. After fighting with the bite to get the correct credit card combo we finally figured it out.
Cancer sucks.
I've done this every time I've gone to Italy. Trenitalia's website can be a bit difficult to deal with but we saved a ton of money by buying early. I'm a super-organised traveller though and always have all my times and dates set ahead of time.

i needed assigned seats and areas for luggage for our trip from rome to florence 2 weeks ago. i knew i could get the tickets when i got there. i asked at the front desk of our hotel and they advised me to go to a travel office around the corner. it was SO much easier than hiking all the way to termini. they issued them right there, assigned seats and we got a discount (for what i'm not exactly clear) but it ended up being less than i would've paid at the train station.
the office was around the corner from the pantheon. let me know if you want the address.
I would like the address please.
