clicky WWSND? : Death in friend's family

The mother of a friend of mine passed away recently (heart attack).  My friend is in her mid-twenties and while she doesn't totally live with her parents, but she does go home every weekend and is really close with her family.  I have her parent's address and would like to send something.  I haven't really dealt with a sudden/unexpected death in my family (only deaths have been grandparents who were already really sick), so I'm not sure what would be most appreciated.

  • Does your friend live nearish or far away? Flowers are nice, but I lean towards more practical...if she's nearish, then how about bringing food over in a recyclable container (so nobody has to return it). The last thing you want to do when mourning is have to think about food. Or could you arrange a food delivery if they're further away?

    She's local.

Does anyone have a food delivery recommendation?

i agree with this. flowers are nice, and having more at her memorial would be beautiful but i'd bring food over or send food over. make sure they're doing ok. i'm so sorry! T&Ps to your friend!

  • Have you talked to her or any other friends to see if they need anything?

When my grandma passed away we got so much food, most of it went to waste, we could only send so much away with family.

I'm so sorry for you and your friends loss.

  • If flowers, send them to the service.  But, the most practical/helpful thing is like KST said, send fod to their house.  Something like a a lasagna that can be frozen or re-heated easily.  And the point about a container that doesn't have to be re-used is good.

  • Good point, might depend on the fam.  I know when DH's mom passed, everyone was at her house all week and it was a pain trying to get everyone fed.  Her immediate family (who were mourning and planning a funeral) had to run out and get food for everyone a few times a day.  It would have been so nice if someone brought food over.

This was very much the case when my DH's mother passed away as well. Food that can be frozen/reheated easily is probably best, in case there's an oversupply problem, but I'd still recommend food.
