Train from London to Edinburgh?

Anyone have a favorite train company to go between England and Scotland?

Re: Train from London to Edinburgh?

  • As far as I was aware, and I could be wrong because it't the only one that services our town (on that route), it's East Coast Mainline.  If you're after a website to book tickets, I'm sure you'll get better suggestions than the trainline, but that's what I use. :)

  • I did this journey in January 2011.  I don't remember the train company, but I booked on thetrainline.co.uk and just chose what was available.  It is a beautiful journey, as it's right along the coast.

There are plug-ins at the seats (wifi if you pay for it) and the journey is like 5 hours.

It goes without saying, book in advance to get a good price.  Though you can only book so far in advance, a couple of months I believe.

Are your parents still in London, snowy?  Going to visit Edi while you're visiting them?

  • Book in advance not only for price but to get a seat!

  • It's East Coast (also branding 'the Flying Scotsman'). I use nationalrail.co.uk to find rates, but if you are planning more than 3 months out, try to sign up for offers from East Coast.

It is a lovely train ride, especially north of Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed, but it is sometimes a bit long.

I'd avoid travelling on Friday evening if you can, as party-goers en route to Newcastle can make that really unpleasant.

This made me laugh out loud. You haven't seen partiers til you have been out in Newcastle on a Friday or Saturday night. In the cold. And no one has on jackets but they have on the shortest, tightest clothes known to man kind.

That's the plan! This is all quite last minute, next week, so we'll see if it works out. We weren't planning to go to London this break, but my parents are moving back about a year sooner than we thought. So we decided we should take advantage of the free place to stay one last time. Who knows when we'll have a good excuse to go to London again!

We'd be going from London to Edinburgh on a Tuesday and coming back on a Thursday, so hopefully there is something decent available since it isn't the weekend. If not, there is always something fun to do in London.

    Thanks for the tips ladies!

I have an awesome hotel and restaurant that we stayed at/ate at over Christmas if you need any suggestions in Edinburgh!

Have you guys been to York? Or even take the train to Newcastle, rent a car and drive around Northumbria, up to Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle, all around there is so pretty.

Any recommendations welcome! Looks like the tickets are quite pricey, but we are still strongly considering it. Thanks for the alternate suggestions, I'm going to look into those as well!

  • We stayed at the Radisson Blu on the Royal Mile, which was a fantastic location. And we ate at Wedgwood, which was like 2 blocks from the hotel and was SO good. The hotel was within walking distance to everything, including the train station.

Yes, but the party should wait until Newcastle!

  • I recently stayed in a self-catered apartment and can pull up the details if it's useful. It was 2 bed, 2 bath flat about 50 yards off of the royal mile, and it was lovely.
  • I've never taken a train from Scotland to London; it is always more expensive than flying :-/

I'm always shocked at how expensive trains are. I love travelling by train, but the prices are so brutal!

If we're talking next week already, flying might be cheaper.  Yes, getting to/fro any airport in London will cost you ?30 but a week in advance train tickets might be insane.  Getting to/from the airport in Edinburgh is only ?7-ish so it's definitely not bad.  Training it would take you city center to city center, though, which is nice. EasyJet has several flights between London and Edinburgh per day so I'd at least consider it.

The Radisson Blu is probably the best located hotel in Edinburgh.  Definitely a good choice.

They'd rival Swansea, to be honest! ;)

  • Tickets and Radisson booked! The whole thing is a bit of a splurge, but we don't know when we'll have an opportunity to be in the UK again, so we decided it was worth it :)

Oh yay! The Radisson is a great location, and there is a pub directly across the street that we had lunch in and it was really good!

Good to know! I am really excited. I was last in Edinburgh when I was about 14 and I really loved it. I can't wait to take DH and rediscover the place. I'm sure it will be pretty much new to me.

I've love some recommendations if you don't mind!

We went to Rome a few years ago and didn't have a single good meal. Ever since then, I've always liked to have a list before going to a city to make sure we don't just end up at mediocre tourist traps for food and drinks.

The Mitre!  That was the very first place we ate when we arrived.  Ahh, memories.  It's on the Royal Mile so you'll pay more than necessary but it isn't outrageous.
