My mom invited me to go to Japan with her on a business trip (yay!), and I'm trying to help plan things out. We'll have a week total, definitely will be staying 4 nights in Kobe (that's where the conference is), and flying into Osaka.
I need to decide: How many nights to stay in Osaka? What is there to see in both Osaka and Kobe (what's not to miss)? Is there any reason to fly out of Tokyo on the way home (vs. flying out of Osaka), or is it way too out of the way/not worth it?
I'm guessing our best option will be taking a train from Osaka to Kobe.
Re: XP: Japan - Osaka/Kobe
Is there a reason you'd stay in Osaka instead of Kyoto? Is the Osaka just additional for vacation?
Kyoto is an hour train ride from Osaka, and I think it's a much more interesting place to visit. Nara is an easy daytrip from either.
Tokyo is an awesome city on its own, but the airport is an hour outside of the city. If you're just transiting through to get to an airport, it's not worth the time/money.
I haven't been to Kobe, and I've only flown in and out of Osaka, so I can't help on those specifics. But, I did spend a week in Kyoto last year, so I've spent time in the area.
I agree with the PP... Kyoto is much more interesting (the Golden Pavilion and Gion - the Geisha district) are both great places to visit there.
Osaka definitely has some touristy places, like the Osaka Castle (it doesn't take too long to see everything there).
I don't remember much about Kobe - we passed through on a tour on our way to the mountains... there was a huge earthquake there in the 90s and a lot of the damage is still visible.
Tokyo is a great major city. If you're looking for a big city, make time to go there. If not, skip it and enjoy the smaller cities and towns.
Enjoy your trip!!!!
