When I'm at the gym, I usually see a couple people walking on a treadmill with the incline at its max and they are holding on to the top of the treadmill as they are walking.
This perplexes me...is this a form of cardio? If you are holding onto the machine, doesn't that make the walking a whole lot easier?
I guess I'm not seeing the benefits or the point of this "cardio"?

People at my gym do this too. Infact, I seem to be the only one who does not.
Lately my leg excercise of choise is hiking the incline all the way up and walking as fast as I can without holding on, then decreasing the incline by 1 and increasing my speed by 0.1. When I get to a 10% incline, I add in walking lunges every 200m until I get to 0% incline. It's tough! Every now and then somone hops on next to me and hikes their incline all the way up and has their speed set to 4.0 while holding on to the bars. Sometimes I get bothered by it and want to say something to the offender. Expecially when I'm working so hard, and they seem to be strolling along. But then I figure it's not my workout. I know how hard I work when I hike up my incline and how much better my legs are looking as a result. That's good enough for me.

Why do you care? They are up and moving, they decided to get off the couch and get to the gym. I hate when people are judgey about what others do at the gym. My mom is so intimidated to go to a gym 'what if I see someone I know, what if I don't know how to use the equipment, what if I can't keep up and people will laugh about me' I keep telling her that everyone is there for their own benefit and no one will be looking or judging her... maybe thats not so true.
