cooking for ronald mcdonald house?

Have any of you cooked a meal for your local Ronald McDonald house? I'm going to prepare a meal in a couple weeks and I'm looking for ideas. It will be for 20ish people and I think they get inundated with pasta dishes/casseroles and cookies. Any ideas? tia.

  • That's a really nice thing to do!

Maybe prep everything for a taco bar?

    Chili?

  • Our local RMH has a webpage that says the items that people typically bring and gives specific suggestions for what to bring that goes over well with families and is easy to serve when they need to. Does yours have that?
  • I used to volunteer on a weekly cooking team for the RMH. Some things that work well are:

    Barbecued Brisket

    Meatloaf

    Tacos

    Baked Potato Bar

No, but that would be nice.

I like the idea of brisket.

  • Other than the previously mentioned things and aside from pasta/casserole...maybe pulled chicken/coleslaw,meatball or french dip subs in crockpot?

    Soup/chili & salad/cornbread?  Roasted whole chickens, potatoes & a veggie?

Having said that, I have no clue how the budget works for the dinner/how many ppl preparing, etc.

I stayed at RMH in Nashville after LO's were born, it was a wonderful place. I always intended to cook for them...then we moved. I'd love to pay it back sometime soon.

I never actually ate a meal there b/c I was at the hospital pretty much all the time, so I don't know what they actually had for "regular" meals. I was there during TG/Xmas holidays, so they always did that type of food.  But they had an awesome fully equipped very large kitchen. GL & thanks for what you are doing!

  • That's really awesome you are doing this.  I had a stem cell transplant last year and stayed at the Transplant House which is similar but for adults.  Groups were always bringing in dinners which was wonderful!  My favorite was when they brought in comfort foods like a couple kinds of soup, fresh bread and brownies/icecream.  Sloppy Joes were a popular one as well.  We also had someone bring in shredded turkey w/ rolls, stuffing etc.

Again, thank you for doing this.  The last thing parents/caregivers want to worry about are meals!

  • Just keep in mind when you're deciding what you'd like to do that you might have to prepare everything there so that might affect you time wise.  Ours requires everything be prepared on-site or in a commercial kitchen.
  • My work team just did this on Thursday.  We made sheppard's pie - a beef version, a turkey version and a veggie version.  It went over really well.

Yes, everything has to be prepared in their kitchen but I'm thinking I could easily go in the morning if need be to put something in the oven to slow cook and then go back to finish stuff up. I would have to double check though about being there in the AM and using the oven all day.

You could also take a crock pot and leave it to cook in that.

  • Can you do some turkey breasts, dressing/potatos, veggies

Or what about a BLT bar...lots of bacon (this will take a long time to cook if you have to fry each strip, there has to be a better way)...but lettuce, tomato, different cheeses, avocado

A baked potato bar with sour cream, bacon, chili, cheese, maybe  a pulled pork, onions, chives, salsa

you could also make a variety of different pizza then just bake them there...by pepperoni, peppers, onions, mushrooms, a ton of cheese and sauce...and just do different combos (pepperoni and peppers, veggie, onions/mushrooms, all pepperoni, combo, pepperoni/mushroom), maybe a tossed salad to go with

Or a Caeser salad bar....so tons of romaine, parmesan cheese, croutons, grilled chicken, lite caeser, regular caeser, shrimp if you are feeling fancy...serve with it some rolls

  • last time we went, we did salad, breasts of chicken, rice, rolls and butter, peas and carrots, brownies, and blondies.  i think they had some chips and salsa already there.

what we learned is not everyone eats in the public room.  a lot of the parents stay up in the rooms with their sick child and other family members.  so the parent will come down and stock up for the entire family and go back to their room.  we had maybe 30 people eat with us... we went through 100 pieces of chicken.  there was none left.
