Tofumonkey let's talk UK student immigration

WTMF is that country thinking, and how is it affecting what you do?

I know what they're doing but can't help but make this face o_O daily when I read the news about international students are immigrants and ZOMG must be stoooooopped...from pumping millions in to the local economy and subsidizing local students (which is desperately needed).

Just wonder what your take on this dumbf uckery is.

Re: Tofumonkey let's talk UK student immigration

  • I hate how the press portrays international students here.   However, it seems that there are a lot of people who abuse the system and come here on student visas even though they aren't really students (they "attend" fake schools), or overstay after their studies are done and work illegally.    But legitimate students who follow the rules shouldn't be maligned just because some other people abuse the system....

Sorry, the press? What about the government who has made it a blatant policy to cap non-EU migrants, including students, while simultaneously raising tuition rates for domestic students and claiming 'no other way'?

    It's ridiculous.

I get that some students make things up and attend fake schools or pretend to come here to study and really work. Sure. But I'd be curious about the 'costs' to the system of this vs. the revenue lost by denying full-paying international students visas.

  • From what I understand those BS "schools" can no longer offer student visas as the government has started rating schools on their trustworthiness as legitimate institutions of learning.

The government literally is counting international students (on temporary student visas) as permanent migrants.  I would love for somebody to explain the logic behind that.

  • I'm not exposed to nearly as much UK news here as I was in Geneva.  Are they really painting people trying to attend fake schools with the same brush as people who have been accepted to attend one of the world's elite university like Oxford, LSE, or Cambridge and are willing and able to pay through the nose for it?

Sorry, unfortunately the only thing I know about the government is what I see on BBC.  I'm not a student and don't personally know anyone on a student visa.   So the only comment I could add was how the press depicts the issue....which I personally can't stand.

There was a big story on BBC about a month ago about how there were hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who had entered the country on student visas (whether legitimate or illegitimate) that the government had managed to "lose track of" for several years after their visas expired.    It seemed to me that they were sensationalizing the student visa system and blaming it for the majority of illegal immigration.    Never mind the fact that there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who DON'T abuse the student visa system and actually have a very positive affect on the economy.

  • I can barely even get into this issue it's so infuriating. We have a private college in the UK so of course we are one of those dodgy fake colleges above a hair shop that brings in dodgy students. We probably sell drugs out the back as well.

The way that we are treated by the UK government simply for the fact that we are privately owned is disgusting.

Our college has been inspected (investigated) 3 times in the last academic year - which consists of me being grilled for 6 straight hours about our operations and policies by 2 uniformed officers intent on closing us down before they even meet me.

I get that the system was open to abuse and it was severely abused by tiny private schools that set up in dodgy, cheap areas and sell off visas more so than courses - where the receptionist is also their lead lecturer and they haven't seen their students in months.

However, our college is in a premises that costs us nearly ?300,000/year, our 600 Chinese students have their attendance taken 6 times per day via a fingerprint reader which is linked to an online system that tracks everything about any student and can even be accessed from my bloody phone and our degrees come from reputable universities in the UK. Our students pay immigration fees, tax - we pay tax, council fees, university fees and god only knows how much in other fees but wait -

IT'S PRIVATELY OWNED SO I'M TREATED LIKE A GODDAMMN CRIMINAL BY THE UK GOVERNMENT.

  • I know. I can't even start to get into it. I just can't.

Yes, please do come to Ireland... we like people to come here and help the economy... Wink

  • Exactly.  I'm sure Ireland would be more than happy for me to come over there, lease a large building that has probably been vacant for some time, employ 20-30 local people, pay taxes and bring in the fees and associated revenues of 600 Chinese students a year - pumping further revenue into local universities, local housing, local retail and services, etc.

The UK? Not so much. All of my students are clearly terrorists and/or illegal workers here to steal UK benefits and jobs from British people. Oh wait, I mean, jobs that British people didn't want, didn't apply for and won't do.
