5k running question.

Hi everyone,

I have been doing the couch to 5k program (just finished the first week). I was wondering - how fast do you run during the running segments? I find I have been doing I guess what I would call a jog. Do you give it your all and run as fast and a hard as you can, or isit ok to go at a slow run/jog pace?

Thanks!

Re: 5k running question.

  • The point of c25k is to ease into running. Do what feels right to you.

  • Go slow enough that you'll be able to finish the designated time at a running pace, or, said another way - don't go so fast that you can't finish the runs.

    Good luck!

  • Go as slow as you need to.  PP are right, the point is to ease into running.

When I first started C25K I tried to go too fast and was having trouble completing the runs and I was getting frustrated.  So I slowed down and was able to finish them and I actually started to enjoy it.  Speed will come with time.

  • When I first started the program I was trying to run too fast, at 5.6 (I had never ran before).  My friend told me try to slow it down, and so I did, and then I could last longer.  Over the course of hte program I could get the TM back up at 5.6 and occasionally 5.7.  Now, 1 year later, I run at 6.7 on the TM.
  • I'm just starting c25k as well, and I do the "walk" segments at 3.5 mph and the"run" segments at 5.0 mph. But I am not a natural runner at all and am starting pretty slowly.

  • I agree w PP. however, I am REALLY slow. I walk at 3.5 and run at 4.2. If I go any faster I can't finish. I also base my treadmill runs on what I "naturally" do when I run outside. Even though I am slow, I still consider it running because my heart rate is where I want it to be.

  • When I started C25K I spoke with a friend who is an experienced marathoner. He said that the main reason people quit running is due to injury and the main reason for injury is by running too far, too fast or too often. I figure the C25K program was designed to handle the "too far" and "too often." So I've always kept it nice and easy for the run. I figure I'll work on speed after I finish the program.

     Good luck!!

  • I agree with everyone else.  Running speed is super individualized.  Do what feels right, you are just starting your running journey.  I think it is better to finish comfortably than burn out and get frustrated.

Good luck - it is a great program.  I did it 3 years ago after I had my son.  I did my first marathon in May.  I'm pregnant again, and will be restarting the program after the baby.  It works!
