Tight Hamstrings

Anyone have any tips or idea's on how i can loosen my hamstrings?

My left one particularly is very tight. Typically my week consists of 2 short runs (3miles) and a long run on Saturday. I do weights 2x a week and Pilates 1-2x a week.

I really felt how tight my left hamstring was in Sunday's Pilates session and I kind of feel like I pulled it. It hurts when I walk. I have been doing hamstring stretches but after I am done the pain/achiness is still there. Thanks for your advice and help.

Re: Tight Hamstrings

  • Do you have a foam roller?  I have tight hammies too and it works wonders on them!
  • No..I do need one too, especially for my IT band. Thanks!
  • Agreed...the foam roller can help. I also use a resistance band and do some stretching with it to really help loosen the hammies up.

Here's a good example in this link:

  • hot yoga!

or, if you belong to a gym with a steam room, stretch in the steam room.  its amazing how it loosens you right up.

since i have started doing these two things, i have become crazy flexible (i can touch my nose to my knees). love it.

  • Everyone else has good advice, but I wanted to add in, work your hamstrings out more!  For every quad or thigh exercise you do when you lift, throw in an hamstring one.  Our quads can almost tend to be overdeveloped (especially with running) and that leads to really underdeveloped hammies.
  • I had some tight hammies about 1.5 weeks ago - I dumped some epsom salt in a super hot bath & soaked. Also foam roll & use the stick.

  • my hamstrings are always ridiculously tight.  ive never been able to bend over and touch my toes, in fact, only after a few years of stretching have i been able to touch mid-calf.  i just try to stretch a lot, it helps, but slowly.  ive do lots of different stretches, but ive noticed that downward dog (now that ive been shown how to do it properly) has helped tremendously.

meanwhile, im off to watch that video. and consider investing in a roller.

  • my right hamstring has been giving me trouble for a couple months or so.  i thought the foam roller thing sounded kind of gimmicky, but i was desperate so I tried it.  it really works.  maybe i'm super uncoordinated, but it took me a few tries to really get the hang of it, but i'm getting there.
