Time for new shoes?

I've basically done C25K twice through on these shoes, repeating each week until I got to week 5 - then continuing straight through week 7 (week 8 should start tomorrow).

I can't estimate how many miles I've put on my shoes in this time, but after Tuesday's 25 minute run, I'm still feeling lingering ache in my hips, and I've read enough around here to think that maybe the culprit is my shoes.

I'm also still 60 pounds overweight (and was more like 80 pounds overweight when I started running/wearing these shoes).  Does my weight affect the rate of wear on the shoes?  It only seems logical that it would.

And, of course, those 25 minute runs were the longest runs I've done so far, so maybe the pain is related more to the duration and intensity of my runs and not my shoes.

How can I know?  Does it seem early to replace them?  I appreciate your input.

  • Two things.  Being overweight does contribute to faster shoe breakdown. Since I've lost 30lbs, I've gotten a lot more mileage out of my newest pair of shoes than out of my first pair of shoes.

    Second, the pain may or may not be endurance related or it may or may not be shoe related.  You can either keep on running and see if your body adjusts, or you can get a new pair of shoes and see what happens then.  If you get new shoes and you still have aches and pains, then it's just your body getting used to the running and you can go back to your old shoes until you have some more mileage on them.

    Also, shoes are going to break down faster if you wear them out and about or to the gym, things like that.  Now that I've been through several pairs of shoes, I have a pair just for the gym and try not to wear my running shoes except exclusively for running now.

  • so you've been running in those shoes for about 6 months? when I was running lower mileage I would replace my shoes every six months or so, regardless of the number of miles.  

    it probably wouldn't HURT to replace them; it might help. but the ache in your hips might be totally unrelated to your shoes too. aches/soreness are normal as you continue to push your limits.  

  • Have you been fit for shoes at a local running store? If not, that is the first thing I'd do.
