Has anyone renewed their passport?
Apparently you can do it online/through the mail if you meet certain criteria, one of them being sending in your old passport. I wouldn't mind doing that if I got it back...I like seeing the stamps from other countries.
Also, I'm assuming that I can renew my expired passport. I am not seeing anywhere on the page that you can't.
Re: Has anyone renewed their passport?
This!
I just got mine renewed with my married name a few weeks ago and it was quick and easy. I sent the info in the mail with a new pic from CVS and received it 3 weeks later. They also sent my old passport back to me with holes punched in it, just to keep.
Mine wasn't expired though. There might be a different process for it if it's past the expiration date.
Did you have to pay for it? I still have my passport under my maiden name and I haven't gotten around to apply for another one but I read somewhere I would have to pay the same price as the original.
Sending the request in sound a whole lot easier than going in person.
Same here! I was told if you just book your airfare under your maiden name and not the married name then there wouldn't be any issues using the old passport of it's not expired. I guess the issue is if you use your maiden name passport but have the airfare booked in the married name then it causes a problem, but apparently it's still OK to book under your maiden name until your passport expires (or so I was told).
I haven't had to renew mine but my friend did with hers and she did get her old one back in the mail. It was after she got her new one, and I remember her freaking out and getting mad thinking she wasn't getting it back, but then a couple weeks later it showed up.
I would have NEVER thought to do this. Thanks for the tip! I really didn't want to go through the hassle of applying and paying for a new one. This makes me ridiculously happy.
When I changed my name, I had to do it as a renew and paid $110 for it (for regular sevice, not expedited.) It took less than 3 weeks to turn around and get it back. And like everyone else said, you get the old one back (separately) with holes punched in it. It is now good for another 10 years and I don't have to worry about it.
The only problem I would see with booking flights under your maiden name is they need two forms of ID and you have changed your driver's license. Then you would not have two matching forms of ID.(I have been asked by TSA for 2, which is the only reason I throw this out there.) Other than that, you should be good.
Sorry, guys! I'm just now getting on here and saw this.
Yes, I had to pay full price of $110 like Liz said. It sucks that they don't give you a discount if it's not expired yet.
I would have just kept my old one and traveled under my maiden name like Erin said, except I'm always the one who books our trips and everything else (credit card, bank accounts, license, etc.) is under my married name. I just didn't want to risk the possibility of any confusion or forgetting to list my maiden name on certain documents when I'm used to my married name now.
