Transitioning to Trail Running?
What do you think is the best way to transition to trail running? I'm assuming start with short distances, but should I ease into it by moving to grass? I'm not going to be able to do 100% of my runs on trails, since I'm training for a road marathon in early May, but I'm also registered for a trail marathon June 30th and I obviously want to get used to varied terrain sooner rather than later.
Also, when you're buying trail running shoes, do you find that you can stay in the same brand that you use for road shoes? I run in Saucony Kinvara and Brooks Pure Connect, so I'm thinking something from those two brands would work for me. Any other recommendations for a shoe to check out? The marathon is on a mountain, I've been told to expect both dirt trails and a bit of rocky terrain, if that makes a difference.

Re: Transitioning to Trail Running?
I didn't really transition. I just decided to run a trail one day and headed out for 6 mile run for the first trail run. My next run was on an 11 mile loop on a very technical trail. I learned my lesson quickly on needing to pay attention. I fell flat on my face busting my lip open, injuring my knee and scraping up my face. It didn't scare me away though. I loved the challenge of trail running versus the road and have been hooked every since!
I ran in my normal road shoes at first but now strictly run in Brooks Cascadias. They are a neutral trail shoe and my road shoe is Brooks Adrenaline which is a stability shoe.

ive always mostly ran on trails so i never transitioned - but i dont think there is a science to it. just get on the trails as much as you can.
if you like the kinvara, then you will love brook's new Pure Grit. Its a great shoe. I fell in love on the first step. its very light weight like kinvara but has a good tread for mountain-ish trails.
When roadrunning got too hard my joints I switched to trail running. I didn't really transition- in fact, even with the varied terrain, trail running is so much easier on my body that I'd probably need to transition back into roadrunning again which I hope to never do- I love, Love, LOVE running trails!
I run in Nike Pegasus Trail shoes and like them. One thing I noticed when I started running trails vs. road is that my toes would take much more impact on trails because the downhill grades are so much steeper than normal roads and my feet would slide forward. I've started testing my trail shoes like I test my hiking boots- by kicking a wall or standing on an incline to see if my toe hits the front of the shoe.

I've always run trail vs. road so I can't really speak to how to transition.
As far as shoes, if I'm on a treadmill in the winter I wear Asics Nimubs, but those aren't "sturdy" enough for the trails I run.
For trails I have Salomon XR Crossmax Neutral CS. They are the most comfortable trail shoes I've ever worn....lots of cushion! Plus, they are somewhat water-resistant, which I really like cause we have such crappy weather!
