Natural Flea/Tick Treatments?

Some background: We live in in the northern Midwest, so our vet has us giving flea/tick medication only during the summer months (May - October). We live in a big city, in an apartment. Our dog (Orion) takes regular walks in the park and plays in dog friendly areas with other dogs. We occasionally take her hiking, but it's usually at the end of October.

Last year we used Frontline Plus for flea/tick medication. No problems with it at all. I was just wondering if anyone uses any natural treatments as opposed to pesticides. I'm fine with sticking with Frontline this year, but we've been trying to be more green and natural and I realized there may be opportunities here as well.

Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Natural Flea/Tick Treatments?

  • I haven't used it myself, so I'm not sure if it repels both fleas and ticks, but some people on the board use Neem Oil spray and/or shampoo.
  • I use Ark Naturals Neem spray and Vetri Science Flea and Tick spray.  I do not use topical chemicals like Frontline.

I believe another nestie uses Vets Best flea/tick spray.

I actually use the sprays on myself too, very helpful against mosquitoes.

  • I usually use Neem, but I saw reps from Ark Naturals and they recommended the Flea Flicker Tick Kicker spray they make.

I also use a Neem shampoo.

We live in an area that is overridden with ticks though, and I do one treatment of Frontline in September. I only use about half the tube though.

Interesting.  This and Vets Best Flea and Tick spray both use clove extract and peppermint oil.

Another recommendation is that if you have a yard, to treat it as well with a natural treatment to help control the pest problem.

  • Thanks everyone! From reading about them, it sounds like Neem is more for after-the-fact, and Vetri is preventive. True? Or did I not get the right info?

Glad to hear there are other methods which work!

  • The label on the neem spray would lead you to think that it is to sooth after bites but if you search just about neem oil in general, it is a repellant.

The thing that I've been doing is comparing the different ingredients that are in the different options.  They don't all work great so I try a combination.  This site has a lot of the different options available.  I don't buy from them but at least I can compare.

  • Also, if your dog doesn't like sprays (which some seem to really hate), Vetri Science makes a wipe that you could try as well.

Oh, gotcha. Thanks for the site!

Zoey is one of these. If I spray her down with something, she will seriously go INSANE afterward, rolling all over, rubbing on things, trying to tunnel under the front door mat, etc. It's fairly hilarious to watch; I almost want to spray her just so I can watch that reaction. LOL!
