I think I'm the only one at my gym that...
Wears deoderant
Seriously. The BO has gotten SO bad lately. Both on the track and on the dreadmills in the tiny cramped stuffy cardio room. Lately I've been flanked by two BO culprits while doing my GHMP and speedwork runs during the week and it's nauseating. Today one of them had the fan pointing right on him and the entire room was just NARSTY.
WWH&F do...grin and bear it? Say something to the odor offenders? Say something to the staff?
Re: I think I'm the only one at my gym that...
Can you say something to the staff? Maybe they can febreeze the place when it's closed (or slow time if its 24hr)? If it's that bad, it might be lingering on the equipment and in the air, and not just be the people there at that exact time.
also... yuck
Bazinga!

The smell at my gym was so bad last night I cut my work out short. I kept sniffing my pits while doing shoulder presses just to be absoultely sure it wasn't me because it seemed the smell was everywhere I went.
I plan on speaking with the staff about it if it doesn't get better over the weekend when the gym is really slow.
Oh it's definitely people-related and not manky-smelling equipment (though bacteria flying off of these stinky people isn't keeping this place hygienic!).
Examples (and yes, I'm stereotyping for part of this in my titles, I'm sorry and I don't want to offend anyone here):
Runner girl 1. I love her, she's an awesome runner, but holy crap she does not WASH HER CLOTHES. She's got 2 outfits and I think she keeps them in her locker to "air dry". She's a bit whiffy to begin with. When I'm on the indoor track, she'll pass me (duh! because she's awesome and that's cool!) and leaves me in her scent wake. It's definitely not "crop dusting", it's just really stinky clothes and person.
New Guy of Indian Descent. I know and love plenty of Indian people in my life. And I accept the fact that deodorant is not necessarily part of their lifestyle. But when NGOID comes in, points the fan at him on the dreadmill, and I am downwind of him, OMG DEATTTTTHHHHYYYYY SMELL. He's only been in the gym for the past 3 weeks or so? And he's also a pretty good runner. But stinky. Oof.
A guy we call "Wally". As in, a nickname for "Walter the Farting Dog" (fantastic children's book if you haven't read it). He definitely crop dusts the entire gym. While singing along to his iPod. He also doesn't wash his clothes often enough.
Now seriously. These people HAVE to know that they reek. So I feel like placing ads for Axe body spray near their bags may be embarrassing for them, likewise mentioning some good hygiene practices near/to them. But do I say something to the staff too? Or do I just suck it up for the rest of my half training and pray for nicer weather at the end of March so I can run outdoors, odor-free?
(I am also in a chippy mood thanks to work today, so I'm sorry if I sound pissy right now, haha).
Well, just to play devils advocate, I am an extremely smelly sweater. I reek when I run or do heavy cardio, and I totally get that b/c I can smell myself, so I know it's bad. It's not my underarms, I wear deoderant and my armpits will smell fresh as daisies, it's just my sweat that is really stinky. Therefore my clothes get nasty as well. It also doesn't help that I sweat a ton. Plus in the confines of a hot gym, that doesn't make it any better either.
I personally haven't found any way to counteract this smell, it's actually pretty embarassing. I don't feel comfortable sometimes hanging out after a race b/c I don't want people to smell me and be horrified. I've actually thought about seeing a dermatologist about it.
So, in courtesy to other people, as soon as I am done my workout I try to get the hell out of my stinky clothes and take a shower. I am amazed that people can actually wear their sports bras and other items numerous times before washing b/c that would just be pure nastiness for me.
So, I understand the whole non-deoderant wearing smell, that's one thing, but if it's not the person's armpits, it may not be entirely their fault. I take two showers a day, sometimes 3, so it's not like I'm dirty, my sweat just smells like funk
Sorry just had to stand up a bit for us smelly folks, who would prefer not to be smelly, but don't know how to
Nono! I'm glad you said something! I don't dislike these people. I really admire Runner girl 1 because she's an awesome fast strong runner. It's just that the combination of ALL of these people being on the dreadmills at the same time as me makes me, um, queasy
It's also why I haven't said anything yet, because I'm sure they know (well maybe not Wally as he's in his own little world) and it would just be picking at an old wound for them.
Is there anything I can do for me though? Wear some vapo-rub on my lip? Bring my own fan? Going at a different time doesn't really work because of my lab schedule and when the gym closes for rec sports at night
I didn't take offense, don't worry and LOL at Wally
I understand trust me, that's why I try not to even use the treadmills at the gym b/c I just get so freaking hot, but sometimes it's an unfortunate necessity. I try to run outside at home as much as I can so I only offend DH when I walk in the door
Honestly I don't know what you could do, except stay as far away as possible, which I know isn't always practical. You could try the vapo though!
THIS IS ME AS WELL! TO A T! My pits always smell fresh and lovely (thanks, clinical strength deod!) but I sweat SO much and my clothes are literally SOAKED. No idea how someone could sweat a lot and wear the clothes multiple times...vomit. When I get home and I am standing still I can totally smell how horrific I am, but when I am running with a small fan blowing on me (and I try to blow it only on me so it does not waft my scent towards anyone else!) I cannot smell it and I hope and pray that no one else can either. I have even gotten to the point where I am doing my stretches afterwards at home because I don't want to be stinking up the relaxation area of my gym

I'm so glad I'm not alone! It sucks, doesn't it?
