If you've been to Curacao, come in please

Our TA mentioned this as an affordable place to spend a week in May.  I'm looking at the Marriott and the room and flight prices are definitely cheaper than the other Caribbean islands I've looked at.  What can you tell me about the island?  Good snorkeling?  Fun things to do?  How are the beaches and locals?  How pricey is the food?  Would you want to spend a week here?  Anything else I should know?  Thanks!

Re: If you've been to Curacao, come in please

  • Hi,

I was in cura?ao  in may.  We spent 5 nights in Aruba and 2 in cura?ao. we stayed at the marriott renaissance - very nice hotel and pool at the Fort and in walking distance to the bridge and town.  i agree that hotel prices were more reasonable than other Caribbean islands.

CUR is known for its snorkeling/diving.  the beaches are nice, but i greatly preferred the beaches (and food) in Aruba.   Aruba is very Americanized in general, and very much so in comparison to CUR... it has a very European feel to it.  Lots more culture and history in CUR.  My advice would be if you want an underwater vacation, consider CUR, if you want a beach bum vacation, go to Aruba.  I am glad we went but probably won't make an effort to go back, unless we stop there on a cruise or something.

  • dh and i spent a week there. it's my fave island of the 14 or so i've been to. the snorkeling is fantastic! the food is outstanding, the island feeel is awesome, the beaches are nice, it's a snap to get around, the people are super nice.  we stayed at the sea aquarium resort which is the sister resort to ours in mexico. we loved it.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • I stayed at the Marriott Beach Resort for my honeymoon (5 years ago).  We were there in March.  The weather was great.  There weren't a lot of people staying there when we were there, so everything seemed very private (could be good or bad).  There is a little strip of beach with great snorkeling- definitely bring reef booties.  We were usually the only guests out on the beach- other guests would be around the pool (I think the majority of the other guests were there for a business conference).  The food at the hotel was good, and took restaurant recommendations from other guests.

Downtown Willemstad is charming and we enjoyed walking around and browsing in the little shops.  We had a very relaxing trip, which was perfect for us.
