Critique our Itinerary

My husband and I are going to Germany in June.  We are visiting friends that are native to the Bayreuth area.  Our plan is arrive in Munich and our friends are picking us up.  We are going to stay in Munich for 2 days and sight see.  Then we are traveling back to Bayreuth with our friends.  We are going to spend a couple of days with them and sight see/visit in their region.  Then we will all ride together to Berlin to spend a couple of days, rounding out the first week.  From this point, is where I feel I need the most guidance of how to best use our time.  We are deciding between leaving our friends in Berlin and taking the train to Prague or returning to Bayreuth with our friends and renting a car to drive to Prague.  Any advice on this is especially appreciated:)  Regardless of how we arrive, our plan is to stay 2-3 days in Prague and then 2-3 days in Vienna and then make our way back to Bayreuth. Our friends will take us back to the airport.

Basically, do you think this is all doable in two weeks or so?  What type of transportation is better?  (We have driven in Ireland and England-but no cities larger than Dublin) Any must sees/places to go in Prague/Vienna?

Thanks:)

Re: Critique our Itinerary

  • That sounds like a nice trip.  I can spend a week in Berlin alone, but Prague is also worth seeing.  I've never been to Vienna, but I have some friends who rank this at the top of their favourite European cities list.  I'd choose trains over cars because they're easy, reliable, and comfortable, not to mention I hate driving.  You can also get discounted tickets with advance purchase.  I've taken a bus+train from Prague to Frankfurt, and it was pretty convenient.  I would do it again.
  • If you take the train from Berlin to Prague make sure you take the fast one.  It cuts travel time almost in half.

I used to live in Prague and have a lot of things to see and do in town in my blog (link in sig).  If you at all like history you should not miss the crypt of St. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church (It's off Karlovo Namesti.  There is a Catholic Church with the same name a couple of miles away, but that's the wrong one).  It's where the Czech paratroopers who assassinated Reinhard Heidrich during WWII made their last stand.  It's an amazing and terrible story.  You can still see the bullet holes in the wall of the church and the hole where the paratroopers tried to dig into the city's sewer system to get out.

  • I think you should take the train as well - having a car in Prague and Vienna won't help you, you'll just have to figure out somewhere to park and I imagine that can get pricey in Vienna particularly.Particularly for such short trips, I would think it would be annoying to deal with a car to just visit these cities.

Have you looked at open jaw tickets at all? Flying into Munich and out of Vienna? Would save you a lot of time and it's sometimes not any more expensive. I see it's all a bit circular with where your friends are living as well so to get up to Beyreuth from Vienna then back down to Munich makes for an awful lot of extra travelling.

  • Love your itinerary. I have been to almost all of the places (just not Bayreuth). At the time I went with a friend from Germany so we went by car. Was a hassle to park the car in Prauge and Vienna. Trains are so conventient and easy in Europe. I would recommend that route. Plus major cities have trams and local trains to transport around the city. We bought a day pass in Berlin that several people could travel on. Definitely doable in 2 weeks. Loved Prague but was only there 24 hours back in 1995. It is on my list to revisit. Enjoy!
