How would you address this? Spin-related - instructors especially welcome!

I'm not a "serious" spinner by any means.  I show up to the classes, I push myself as hard as I can, I clean my bike, I leave.  I enjoy the classes because the music is motivational and the instructors are fun.  I can focus on the rhythm and work harder than I thought was possible - and have fun doing it.

However, the last 3 classes I've been to have included at least a couple people sitting in the middle who freaking TALK to each other the whole class.  It's so distracting, I can't stand it.  Here I am, pushing myself up the "hill", panting, sweating, etc, and overtop the music (and the instructor) all I can hear is these two people talking (and it seems to be different people every time).  One of these sets of people seems to treat spin as social time because they spend the entire hour sitting up, pedalling slowly, and talking.

I will give them a death stare, but it's dark in there and I don't think they can really see me.  Since it's the middle of class, I don't know how to approach this - do I stop what I'm doing, walk over, and ask them to shut it?  Talk to the instructor prior to class and have him do it as needed?  Continue with my current method of silent resentment?

  • There is nothing you can do about it.  As an instructor, I know how obnoxious and disruptive that is, but you can't do a thing about it.  They pay the same amount as you to be there and you cannot decide how they choose to waste that hour of their time.

I turn up the music louder, talk louder and also mention several times that you are not working to your full potential if you have enough energy/breath to talk to your neighbor.

  • I also wanted to add that the instructor usually is not the one to enforce rules, so you may want to talk to the manager or owner to get some resolution.

I like this approach.  I wish that our instructors did this.

And I think down deep I know there's nothing I can do about it.  Which makes me even more resentful and angry.  And I know that angry and resentful isn't really helping my workout.  I guess I just need to work on getting to my happy place.

  • I've had instructors that make an announcement at the beginning of class to keep conversations until after class b/c it's distracting to others when there has been a constant issue with it. One would also repeat it in the middle of class when people were being annoying.  I love her class and love that she's willing to do that knowing that most everyone except the talkers find it extremely annoying.  Talk to the instructor after class and see what they say.

  • My gym has comment cards that I have filled out before about this same issue. Nothing ever seemed to get done about it I guess you really can't make people not talk! It is very frustrating though I feel your pain! Once the 2 ladies next to me were talking very loudly in a foreign language and laughing which made me even more mad because I had no idea what they were saying or laughing about?!? I wish they would at least post a sign that says "out of consideration to others please take your conversations outside". I was to chicken to talk to anyone in person but mabey you can try that.

  • I couln't talk during spin class if I wanted to!  It's hard to even breath!  OP, could you maybe choose a bike at the front of the class close to the instructor?  Maybe it would be less distracting.
  • This drives me crazy, too.

I have to make a specific effort to remind myself that I'm getting a way better workout than they are. I don't know if it's competitive nature, or what, but when I feel like I'm doing better than someone else, it pushes me harder.

  • The spin teachers at my gym usually make an announcement in our classes along the lines of putting phones away (or at least not answering them/texting during class . . . leave the room if you need to) and that you're in the class to exercise your body, not your talking muscle.
