Disney and cruise or beach?

I am planning to take my DD to DW for her 5th bday, end of September.  I also have a DS who will be 22 months at the time.  She has repeatedly asked to the see the ocean/go to a beach.  If you had the choice for a week long family trip, would you do Disney cruise/DW or DW and beach vacation?  If you opt for beach vacay, how long at DW v. beach and what beach do you recommend (I've heard Anna Maria Island?).  Thanks!  I'm not even sure where to begin on planning this.

ETA:  We will be doing DW either way, I'm just not sure whether to spend the other part of the trip on a Disney cruise or at a beach.

Re: Disney and cruise or beach?

  • Go to http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/. You can look at all the options, price out the rooms, see what meal packages, airfare and transfers would cost as well.

I have to tell you that we took a Disney cruise from Orlando to Key Wets, Cayman Island, Cozumel and Castaway Cay (Disney's private island) and we had a blast. Everything is included and the service is above anything I've ever experienced. I've never been to Disney World with children (I went about 20 years ago) so I can't say what it's like but with kids as young as yours, it may be just the right thing.

One thing you must must must do if you do decide to take a cruise is make sure you bring children's anti-diarheal medicine, baby tylenol, and any other meds you think you might need. My son woke up one day vomiting and having diarhea and we had to go the the medical office on board and we were confined to our room for two days (CDC regulations). Which sucked because after his first dose of meds from the doctor, he was fine.

  • Still with that experience, we'd do a cruise again in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact we are doing a Nick Cruise in August. Can't wait.
  • I'm less concerned about the cost aspect right now as just which would people recommend as the better vacation with kids.  Thanks for your tips though.
  • We went on a Disney cruise Nov. 2010 with our 4 y/o and 3 y/o.  We had an absolute blast.  Our cruise was 5 days/4 nights.  We went to Nassau (we opted to stay on the boat) and Castaway Cay (Disney's private island).  It was cool on the beach and the water was cold but my kids had a great time.  Depending on what cruise you take, it seems to me you could hit the beach a couple days which should satisify your DD's beach requirement.  We also spent 1 day at DW.  We got a park hopper pass (got it b/c the resort screwed up our reservation so they gave us a park hopper rather than the one park we paid for) and we hit DW and Disney's movie park (can't remember the name).  We pushed the kids so we could see alot of stuff and they did really well but they were very tired that night.

If it were me and either money wasn't an issue or you could get a good deal, I'd do DW and the cruise.  It's alot of Disney but on the boat, you get really good access to the characters and they are all around so photo ops are easy to get.  Disney  has come out with a few new boats so I'm not sure what is available to the Carribbean now but Disney knows how to do things right.  The food was good, the service was great and all the people we came in contact with were very professional and super nice, also very kid friendly.  DH and I went on a cruise about 11 years ago and said we'd never go on another cruise.  Just wasn't our type of vacation.  With kids though, it was so nice b/c we actually felt like we got a vacation of our own and some alone time.

Have fun with whatever you end up doing!
