DH preparing his first dinner... I'm scared.

It was a long, long, long day today for me and I got home and didn't immediately start cooking. DH started to ask what was for dinner and I told him to cook.

I'm scared.

  • How was it? What did he make?

  • Good Luck! Whenever my DH cooks, he calls me over to help. It kinda defeats the purpose.

  • dmm - the second I asked him to take care of dinner, he asked what to make. I sighed and he got p***ed, but figured something out himself.

He ended up making scrambled eggs with chorizo and shrimp thrown in. For some reason he decided it was totally ok to mix the frozen shrimp in with the egg. That was a watery mess and I had to take over. I think I'll let him cook more - it's time he learned!

Think I'd get in trouble if I started a "Basque Moms - please teach your sons to be independent" interest group?

  • The frozen shrimp sounds gross :(. Good think you saved the day.

  • This makes me happy I met a man who loves to cook. When he has time of course. At least your H figured something out! I bet he'll learn fast now that you have aready pushed him to do it. Was he proud of himself? Maybe try giving him a recipe.next time. DH has a karlos arguinano (sp?) Cookbook with pictures that he loves. Try one of those!

  • Hahaha, well good for him to finally learn how to cook. What did he do before you? I promise when my son gets old enough to get him in the kitchen and cooking some dishes so he can learn.

Good idea. I'll hit the bookstore this afternoon.

Dude, he's Spanish. He lived with Mom.

If I have a son you better believe I'm teaching him how to help at home.

  • Good for your DH for trying to cook. I bet a lot of men would have just called a delivery service. :-) I like to cook myself, but if I told DH to, I can pretty much guess the four dishes he'd make. All with about 1500 calories / serving. How that man stays thin is a mystery to me.

This is my DH too, I'll rarely ask him to make dinner because I know all of his cooking expertise involves cream, butter, and pasta.

Hahaha, I was afraid you would say that. (the living with mom bit).

I'm asking this question honestly, do you think if you have a son your MIL will allow him to do anything?  Do you think she'll coddle him like her own?  I think that's a cultural thing. To cater for the men and make the women do everything for the men.  I say this because it happens in my own family too.  When my mom was here visiting she did so many things for my husband.  She was suppose to be here to visit and spend time with the LO.  She always was worried about DH and his lunch, his dinner, did he eat enough, did he like dinner, is he thirsty, did his laundry need to be done, etc.  I think when she left he was more sad that I was.

It's something that I find is changing very rapidly in DH's family. His Dad doesn't do much - he cooks two dishes well and cleaning is out of the picture. Grandpa helped out - but had to close the blinds before doing so because he didn't want the neighbors to see. DH and SIL's H help out quite a bit. I was extremely pleasantly surprised that DH was so interested in cleaning up. And hey, he's got a 1/3 time contract and I'm working full time, there's no way I can juggle everything.

I'm sure if/when we have a son he'll have to help out, GM be d***ed. There's a great humor book in Spanish about the Basque wife. It's called Husband Taming Techniques of the Basque Wife by Oscar Terol. I've had a good laugh reading it.
