Update on the woman who took the medal w/o finishing the race
She sent an email today saying she had a small muscle tear. Then she asked about another race and ended with, ? it's all about the bling? It just rubbed me wrong as a closing.

Re: Update on the woman who took the medal w/o finishing the race
Ummmm...those are the ones that give those of us who run/walk for the "bling" a bad name! Ugh! I will fully admit that I love getting my medals! But darn it! I at least do the work for them!
So....she sucks!

As if that were a decent explanation.
No one else gets a medal for getting a "small muscle tear".
Maybe she could try to enter a kids' fun run to really get one, especially since she already whines like a 5 year old. I hear those are generally under 2 miles so maybe she could, you know, actually FINISH and get one next time...
Suckage.

This is where I am. I have no desire to do any races with her and I am having a really hard time not replying and letting her know her suckage. Our coach effed his knee up during the run. He finished but he had to cancel his classes for the next few days and has to stay off of it. She never once asked how he was doing, it's just all about her and it's annoying.
Serious competitors don't compete "for the bling."
If that were the case, I'd have all my medals from swimming and running on display. I think they're all in a shoebox in storage right now.
Insecure people race for silly reasons like that. People who know what they're racing for (a cause, a personal best, basically an ultimate goal) don't care about that stuff.
meh.
I run to PR, but I still enjoy the medal at the end of the race. I have all my medals hanging on a board in our office. I guess it depends on your idea of "serious."
ETA: I do think that really stinks that she thinks she deserves a medal for running 2 miles then quitting bc of a "muscle tear."
Well that's not really fair. Yeah, my medals are actually in a shoebox too, but I'm damn proud of them and I think anyone who's worked hard to achieve a goal has every right to brag about it and what the medal represents to them if they'd like.
I realize that this particular instance is a completely different scenario. This runner didn't earn it & I have no idea why she'd want it or ever brag about it like it's something she worked for, but to say that the only medal that's really worth praise or bragging rights is an Olympic medal is a little belittling to people's accomplishments.
I so don't get this person. What good is the medal if you know deep, down inside you didn't earn it?
I am not the kind of person to sign up for a race. I simply don't like people watching me do anything, let alone run. However, last summer I trained for a 5K as if I was running it. I then ran 5K, timed myself and treated it like it was a race (just one all by myself I guess) because I wanted to know that I could do it. This summer my goal is to run 10K. All by myself again. I don't want a medal, I just want the satisfaction of knowing that I can do it. I sure don't want the pat on the back if I hitched a ride home that day. Some people.....
I agree with the idea that I am serious about running a PR, but I know I am far from being a serious runner. Each of my medals was rightly earned with a lot of sweat and determination. This woman just sucks and a PP had it right when they said she is rather self absorbed.
Yuck.
A good friend of mine is obsessed with race medals too. Signs-up for races primarily based on how "nice" the finisher's medals are. I don't get it either. Mine get tossed in a cardboard box.
Haha. I've run some courses that the nicest race medal in the world could never make up for! Of course, I'm a location obsessed runner. I love the destination races. Great courses, crowd support & scenery are what I look for.
Haha, very true.
But in all honesty, even though I chuck all my race awards into a carboard box in the closet, I won't let my husband throw-out the box. He asks all the time if he can get rid of it. One day when I'm all elderly, I'll want to bore my grandkids with the stories behind them
What's the point if you didn't even complete the race? geesh
This. I feel as long as you FINISH the race then you have a right to have that medal and feel accomplished.
This person DID NOT do that which is why I said earlier that she gives people who like running to earn medals a bad name.

I imagine her conversations would go like this," Well see grandkids, this one was for people who were running 13.1, but I was smart and stopped at mile 2 because even when you do that you can STILL get the medal. Never work hard for something you can halfass, because the sparkly pretty end result will still be the same."
I keep mine in a box for the same reason. They're fun mementos to have of the places I've been and things I've done. I would think it was cool looking back on my parents or grandparents medals & hearing their stories,
well that is not really fair. we all cant be olympic athletes. i am proud of myself when i win a race.
OP - you should recommend a few smaller races to her. they often only give out medals to the top finishers. she will probably have a priceless face when she gets nothing except a half a bagel at the end.
Haha. This is exactly where I'm at.
Last year I got 3rd in my age group at a big race in Colorado. It's a cheesy gold pan. I'd been trying for THREE years to win a trophy at this race. Over the past two years I'd run the race I'd pr'd by 14 minutes. I love that trophy.
I think it's a tiny bit off to say the only bling worth bragging about is an Olympic medal.
