San Diego police got a report about 9:30 a.m. that campus personnel had identified the boy as a suspect in the theft of a number of iPods at Correia
Middle School, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.
After questioning the youth, officers informed him that he was under arrest, according to Brown. When they tried to handcuff him, the 5-foot-10-inch student began shouting and resisting, she said.
After the boy refused repeated orders to stop struggling and comply, one of the officers used the electric-shock gun on him, the lieutenant said.
It took two shots from the device to subdue the teen, she said. The officers then took him to Rady Children's Hospital for an evaluation before transporting him to juvenile hall to be booked on suspicion of theft.
The youth suffered no significant injuries during the scuffle, Brown said.

Kid sounds like a derelict to me.

On the news last night they mentioned his weight as well (which I have forgotten) and that he a) injured a police officer pre-tazing and b) pulled the prongs out like it was NBD the first time.
I wanted to punch the cop though. He said something along the lines of "well, there were a lot of options. This was the one I went with" which, to me, implied he could have shot the kid if he felt like it (but that might be my opinion of SDPD coloring the statement.)

Yeah, maybe I'm missing something, but if he was actively resisting arrest and had already injured one of the officers I'm not outraged by it.
Me either. At this point, everybody knows that tazing is used in law enforcement. If you don't want to get tazed, don't do illegal stuff. It's not like he got pulled over for speeding and was tazed. He was a theif who was resisting arrest. Yes, he was a minor, but I imagine no matter what the cop did, it would have been terrible because it was a minor. And I am not usually one to defend cops.
14 is still a minor, I understand, but it's also old enough to know that if you're going to go around stealing ipods, and then fighting the cops who are trying to arrest you, they're not just going to give you some candy and try to reason with you.

I am not sure what other choice they had. I get he is a minor but how else are they supposed to restrain someone that is that tall and has already injured an officer while resisting arrest?

My only issue was the cop implying they could have shot him (which they could have, but again, my opinion of the SDPD totally colors my annoyance at that.)

DH is a police office and he has had to testify in trials where he was asked about using excessive force and he always replies that he only used as much force as was necessary. If the guy doesn't resist, they don't get hurt. The more they resist, the more injury they risk.
Just because the kid is 14 doesn't mean he's a choir boy. It's funny, when some kid gets injured while resisting arrest, they always show the communion picture, never the mug shot or the pic of them flashing gang signs.
I don't have a problem with this at all. Perhaps, my opinion is influenced by the fact that at one point I taught some very strong/muscular 14 yr old delinquents and can understand how a taser would be the quickest and safest way to restrain one while protecting others around him.
I'm not sure how good or rough of a school the kid in SD was in but if it was anything like the district I used to work in, seeing cops get injured by a 14 yr old classmate would likely cause even bigger problems the next time the police were called in for a bigger group incident.
There have been some crazy stories in the local news lately about out of control fights in schools in Philly. I'm thinking watching a classmate get tazed might be effective.
