BR: Travelling

Any tips re: tavelling with a baby? We are taking our first real trip with her at the end of the month to Ottawa.

I plan on bringing either the PnP or RnP for her to sleep in. Besides the normal stops to feed/change her, is there any rec. amount of time that you should stop to just take the baby out of the car seat so they can stretch/move around? She's eating every 3-4 hours now but I don't know if that is too long to let her go just all strapped in there. Or, am I just overthinking this and a baby doesn't need time to stretch/move around?

She generally falls asleep w/in 10 minutes of being in the car (*knock on wood*) so I'm not too concerned with her being a fussy-butt.

Re: BR: Travelling

  • Stupid question, but how far of a drive will it be for you?

She's only 4 months old, so I don't think you need to stop specifically for her to stretch.  We traveled from MA to CT when Sam was 3 months old -- it was a 2.5 hour drive and she slept the entire time.  We did the same trip a few weeks ago, and though she slept a majority of the time this go 'round, the end of the trip was a little fussy because she was hungry and done with her seat, but she's also a toddler and loves to walk.

The farthest we've driven with Sam so far has been from MA to Yarmouth Maine last July,  which was 4 hours and this was for a long weekend.  We stopped halfway for food, so it was easy for all of us to stretch and have a change of scenery.  We packed enough clothes for her for the weekend, along with all her necessities at the times (bottles, formula, jarred food, diapers, etc), her stroller, and she slept in the PnP while in the hotel room.  We're making the same trip this coming summer and I'm crossing my fingers it's going to be an easier trip.

    Good luck!

  • We are going to Ottawa to see the Bruins vs. Senators game at the end of the month. I hope J knows what he is getting us into ! Stick out tongue

I think the only thing I'm really concerned with is her bottles. We obv. don't have enough to last her for 3 days so I am going to have to wash them. I will probably just bring a whole case of water vs. trusting whatever comes out of the tap (to wash them). We haven't booked the hotel (yet) but I'm hoping they have a microwave so I can still sterilize the bottles.

We brought water bottles with us for drinking water for both Sam and ourselves, but the microwave is a little bit more than I ever cared to get involved in, especially while traveling.  Love my daughter, but I was more than OK washing her bottles out with soap in the sink with scalding water....  but hey, do what you gotta do!

  • We made the five-hour trip to Baltimore when Adrian was 7 weeks and again when he was 8.5 months. The first time, we stopped twice to feed him/change him. He pretty much slept the rest of the way. He didn't really need to stretch and was fine in his car seat. The trip took us about six hours because of the stops.

The second time, we stopped once on the way in and made sure to go somewhere where Adrian could move around a bit and let go of some energy.

We were EBF, so we didn't bring bottles at all. I have no recs on that part.

We brought the RnP when he was little. We also brought a few toys.

I guess put me in the bad parent category because the only time we ever sterilized bottles was before the first use. After that, it was sticking on rubber gloves and washing them in scalding hot water.

Also, I would recommend bringing the PNP over the RNP because I believe it was around 4 mos that Evie was able to start sitting up in the RNP even strapped in.  I believe that's when they recommend to stop using it.

We make frequent trips between PA and MD, which are about 3 hour drives. Usually Evie sleeps straight through.  I feed and change her before we leave so that she has a full tummy and clean bottom... so that helps her nap better.  If I were taking a longer roadtrip, I would expect to stop when she woke up... which would probably a good idea to stop and stretch anyway.

  • We drove from MA to VA for thanksgiving (Hunter turned 4 months while we were down there). We left very early morning and he slept the first 4 hours there and back. We stopped to nurse and change diaper about every 2 1/2  hours after he woke up.

He slept alot, but I also made sure to rotate toys to keep him busy, and I climbed in the backseat with him for awhile. He did really good.

We brought the rnp since that was what he was still sleeping in at home and kept the same bedtime routine.

Do  you use the microwave bags to sterilize? Those are awesome!

  • We've made three 5 hours trips with Alex to NJ to visit family.  First time he was 7 months old, second 9 months and this last time 11 months. The first two trips weren't too bad although on the way back each time Alex is fussier than the way down.  He slept a lot.  We would leave early morning to go down and then left midday the next day to head home.  This last time he did not do as well since he is way more mobile and does not like sitting still for that long so we stopped three times on the way down and two times on the way back.  We let him play and crawl over us in the car to get out some energy - this was good and bad - good because he loved it, bad because he freaked out even more when we had to put him back in his car seat to get going again.

As far as what to bring, I would definitely suggest the PNP over the RNP that way you have a clean surface for her to play on too, rather than the motel floor (I'm insane OCD about floors now!)  We brought bottles and just washed them in the sink with scalding water as others said.  We used to sanitize the bottles in a pot of boiling water on the stove, but stopped doing that when Alex was 4 or 5 months.  I ditto the bottled water for bottle making while in the car.  I was measure out formula and put it in the bottles and then just add the water when he needed a bottle.   Definitely bring extra receiving blankets to use as changing pads and rags to clean up various messes.

Also obviously toys that attach to the car seat and any other favorites to keep her occupied if she's not sleeping.

  • We have gone to Toronto (4 hours from us or so) twice now with Nate. One when he was 3.5 months and once just last month (9.5 months). He did great both times. Slept the whole time the first time but not this time but I think it was because he could see me because I was sitting in the 3rd row.

The first trip, we brought the PNP vs the RNP because I just thought he'd sleep best in it over night. Plus it had the changing station etc. It took up less room in the car too. I brought my own dish soap and sponge and towel. The hotel we stayed at did have a microwave and refrigerator which was helpful for my pumped milk but we didn't sterilize  his bottles. I soaked them overnight in Hot water and then washed them out the next day. He was nursing too at the time so I didn't need as many bottles at the time.

We actually now that I remember brought both the RNP and PNP bc we were visiting family too and it was easier to bring the RNP to their house for a few hours. We also would let him play in the RNP while we moved around and got ready etc. But if we could only fit one I'd def say the PNP.

We also brought everything he used at night to make him feel like he was at home since it was the first time he had slept in the PNP over night. He did fine!

    Good Luck!

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

I actually just use the Avent microwave sterilizer thing but if I find out the hotel has microwaves in the rooms, I'll probably use the bags.

I didn't even think of that! lol I always use the bags. I was going to say, 99% of hotels that have free breakfast have a microwave in that area that I have used before Smile
