  • Thank you! I'm working on a project and have to research Turkey's culture and atmosphere. I figured the best place to start would be with people who actually live(d) there. I don't have any specific questions but anything he wants to say about the general culture would be helpful.
  • The generals

Mostly muslim ( shaifi school of islamic thought)

Abstain from pork, alcohol, sex before marriage

    Celebrate Ramadan and Eid

Some wear the hijab(womens head covering) and some do not but its fairly open and accepting on both spectrums

Food is a major part of the culture and everything is served with Turkish Coffee or some tea

Women believe they can read there fortunes out of the coffee/tea grounds at the bottom of there cups

Home decor is typically old world/victorian era style

Traditional gender roles( women housewives/men breadwinners)

There is no "off" or "on" in the turkish language so they say phrases like"open the light" "close the light"

Younger turks will kiss the hands of the elders and then place the elders hand on there forehead as a sign of respect.

If you come from a lineage of sheikhs or imams all the sons or men in the family are called sheikh as well.

Most everyone in a region knows and/or is related to everyone else in the region

Turks believe in the supernatural and most likely have stories of supernatural experiences

Tea is tylenol to a turk and tea is the cure for every illness

Instead of the belt turks are beat with slippers when they misbehave

The kurds in turkey were oppressed to abandon there language and culture until recent years but they are still oppressed and looked down on as scum

Some regions are really humid and warm and some regions get very cold and snowy

Turks love entertainment, music, tv, sports and try the hardest to produce an american recognized actor/actress from turkey

Religious men sit when they urinate

Women dress modestly (scarf or no scarf)

Turkey is really Turkiye but since its hard to pronounce americans and english say Turkey.

Im having a brain freeze so if you think of some more questions or have questions, dont hesitate to ask and I will do my best to help.
