T & P for my Mom, please

My Mom's company has been doing a restructure and today was the day everyone learned their fate.  My Mom is being let go.  Her last day is 29th June... on the bright side they can plan and she has known this was an option for more than a year so my parents are prepared.

I still feel awful, my Mom is 57 and is the breadwinner.  With her severance, she will get paid for at least six months, if not until this time next year.  Luckily, she has been there 19 years and because she is over 55 she and my Dad will remain on their medical as if she retired and she will get her full retirement, but ugh...

Some thoughts and prayers would be appreciated, I know she will be looking for a job.  I feel bad, she only wanted to work another five years.

  • lots of t&ps! I can't even imagine how hard it must be to go through at our parents age. It's really great that she prepared (although you never really fully prepare for that kind of news) and I hope she is able to find something. Keeping medical must be a major relief.

  • How terrible for your mom, sending your family vibes!

  • I'm sorry.  I can't imagine having that happen at this stage in life, but good news about the medical at least.  I hope she finds something else soon.

  • Lots of T&P for your Mom. We're seeing a lot of this here right now. It breaks my heart.
  • Sending thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine how hard that is at that stage in life. I hope she finds another job that makes her happy.

  • Thanks, we emailed today and I am going to call her tomorrow.  I am going to give her a day to regroup.  I feel awful this has not been her week.  Not only did she find this out, her front tooth fell out last night!

No, we are not hicks! When my sister was a baby, she lifted her head and hit her front tooth and the shock of her head hitting her tooth killed the tooth.  They repaired it, but it has been 28 years.  And she went to the dentist and is going to get an implant, which was scheduled for the 1st March, but yesterday it just fell out!

In less than 24 hours, she lost her tooth and her job (although not for a few months).

Thanks for the thoughts ladies.  I know she had good contacts in her industry (insurance) so I know she'll find something.  But it is still tough, thank god they get to keep medical.

  • That is rough. I am sending out some thoughts and vibes to your parents! I hope she finds something soon and is able to get that tooth figured out. I have a partial fake tooth that I have to have touched up every once in a while and that is a PITA.

  • T&P's sent. It's good that she's prepared, but that's still scary.

  • Oh no. :-/ My mom had a late-career change when she was 56 about 7 years ago. It was a good thing she quit because she would have been fired with her boss 2 months later. She LOVES her current job, so there's still hope that if your mom wants to work, she can find someplace that will appreciate her experience.

  • I'm so sorry this happened but relieved to know she keeps her insurance - that's the scariest thing in the world for me about the idea of moving back to the states. My dad was laid off when I was 17 and it was horrible. It did eventually all work out for the best, but it was a pretty overwhelming time. I really hope your mom finds something soon.

  • Ugh. My parents went thru this as well, so I know what it's like. But the medical is a great help. Sending lots of job vibes their way!
