Where to stay at Disney World

We are going at the end of May and aren't sure where we should stay. We for sure want to be staying at DW at one of the resorts. We also want access to the monorail. DD#1 will be thirteen and DD#2 will be ten months. Any advice and extra tips and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cost is not a huge issue but we would like it to be reasonable.

TIA

Re: Where to stay at Disney World

  • Only 3 resorts are on the monorail line...Contempory, Polynision, and Grand Floridan.   If you stay at the Cont, you can walk to the Magic Kingdom.   If you stay at the Poly, you can walk to the Ticket and Transportation Center to board the monorail to Epcot.    However these 3 resorts are considered deluxe and are $$$.

You don't have to stay at one of the monrail resorts to use the monorail.   Heck, you don't even have to stay om property.   Anyone can use the monorail.

I would check out the boards at www.disboards.com for some great advice from seasoned Disney people who know the in and outs of the parks and the resorts.

All of the resorts on property have shuttle bus transportation to the various parks.   Some also have boats to some of the parks.

  • I know you want to stay at a Disney Hotel but I stayed last year at the Hilton on Bonnet Creek and I loved it.  I got a really great deal and the hotel is so pretty. There is a lazy river at the swimming pool and they have a bus that leaves pretty much every 30 mins to the parks. It is on the WDW property so it like 10 mins drive max. to the Magic Kingdom.

  • I like staying at the Disney properties.  The Contemporary is very convenient with the monorail.  The last time we went, we stayed at the Swan, which is not on the monorail but has a shuttle to the Magic Kingdom and a water taxi to Epcot.  The Swan had a great pool area and walking distance to downtown Disney.  We got a pretty good deal on travelocity, and it was well worth it.
  • The monorail is super convenient, but like others said, those hotels are generally not reasonable in price.   You don't have to walk to the transportation and ticket center to get to EPCOT if you don't want to as you can take the monorail around to the Transportation and Ticket Center.  There is a stop right at the Polynesian just as there is at the Grand Floridian and Contemporary.  With an infant, the convenience is very nice.  However, you may also want to look into the Wilderness Lodge which is right on the Lagoon with all the other hotels, but there is a boat that goes back and forth from the Magic Kingdom.  This hotel is also a deluxe level, but is generally quite a bit cheaper than the other three.  I'm a huge fan of staying on Disney property.  I know there are plenty of decent hotels outside of Disney, but it is so much more convenient to stay on property.
  • We have stayed at the Grand Flordian twice and it is super convenient for MK access.  You take the monorail to the park in the morning and it is only one stop away.  Coming back, we take the boat and again it is only one stop.  If you take the monorail back you have to circle the whole thing, making 4 stops.  The only issue with the boat is that you have to fold down your stroller, with the monorail you just wheel it on.

We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge once, I was not a fan.  Our room was incredibly dark. It did have boat access to the MK, but you had to take the bus everywhere else.

Have fun!  Next on our list is the Contemporary, also a monorail resort.

  • We have always stayed at Port Orleans - French Quarter on the WDW property.  Buses run all day and we've never waited more than 5-10 minutes for one.  There is also a little boat that will take you to Downtown Disney as well as the other Port Orleans property.  I don't think it's too expensive and they have a decent pool with a children's pool as well.  The slide to the big pool looks like a dragon's tougue and the hotel has a Mardi Gra - New Orleans theme.
