Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

I am thinking about taking a cruise with Royal Caribbean this summer. I was on Carnival Magic last year and I loved it. I went over to cruise critic and it seems that most people are really loyal to one company. So in your opinion, what cruiseline is better? I looking at Independence of the Seas. How is the food on RC?

Re: Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

  • i have done 3 RCs and going on my 3rd Carnival this May on various levels of ship classes.  I've also done Princess (which is a sister company to Carnival).  I don't really pick a cruise because of the cruise line - the itinerary is most important to me, especially one with minimal days at sea.  The boat is the second factor.  I don't like the smaller, older boats.  If you like the Carnival Magic then I'd stay you be happy on the Independence of the Seas.  I have found the food very tasty on both lines and it would be hard for me to pick which "line" is better.

  • I've cruised with both and enjoyed myself on both.  I think that Carnival has a more bosterious vibe... between the 'whoo hoo I'm drinkin' like a frat boy' types to the families w/ young kids who aren't necessarily 'whoo hoo' but generate a fair amount of energy/noise.

RC was a little more sedate, IMO.  Not like old-age home sedate, but just seemed a little more calm.  The food was good, no complaints there.

Personally, I probably preferred RC, but I feel that alot of the complaints about Carnival being horrific are unfounded/unfair.  I'd sail either line again (FWIW, I've been on Carnival once and RC 2x).

  • I agree with all of this!

  • I may be a little late to this post, but I'll put in my 2-cents. DH has been wanting to go on a cruise so we decided to go on one this year.

Carnival- I've sailed with Carnival 2x (in 2002 and 2003) and while the food (I thought) was really great, it was definitely a party atmosphere. Granted though they were both cheap cruises so maybe it just attracted a younger crowd? When I was researching our cruise for this year, I told DH I would not go back on Carnival, but the Nesties on here told me that Carnival is trying to eliminate their notorious party atmosphere reputation and now has set a strict age limit. Once I heard that, I started looking at Carnival itineraries again (but still decided on RC since I had always wanted to try them.)

RC- We are going on Oasis, and I picked this specific ship for several reasons. DH and I do not drink and this boat has a lot of activities to offer (flow rider, rock climbing, ice skating, zip lining, adults-only pool area, and a great and wide selection of shows). We are active people so these suit us well. It is one of RC's newest ships and I was excited when I've read reviews and seen pictures.

I completely agree that I normally choose the itinerary first and foremost, then the ship. I also do not want an older, smaller ship and don't mind paying a higher premium for updated features.

  • We are doing a Carnival cruise the 25th of Feb to Mar 4th. We picked that line because it was in our price range and the places we wanted to go.
