OCONUS dental question

I seem to recall that the military provides dental care for command sponsored OCONUS dependents, is that correct? If so, I'd like to wait until after we PCS to cancel my coverage. Can I do that at the TRICARE office on post, or have them fax it, since it is not provided through TRICARE?

So many details. . . My head is going to explode before I even touch ground in Germany.

Sorry for being a PW today. :o)

I know that dental is fully covered by the military for OCONUS.

I'm pretty sure you can set a date with UC to cancel coverage. Just call them up and tell them when you're leaving and that you would like your coverage to end on a certain date.

Thanks! I was pretty certain about full coverage, but confirmation is helpful. Good idea to call them up. Makes perfect sense!

  • It's more complex, though, than "fully covered" IME.

When I was in Japan, we were limited to one cleaning a year, in the sponsor's birth month, despite the official coverage being twice a year.  Shortly after I left, H told me that they put all dependent preventative care on hold.  I don't know how long that lasted, but it was a minimum of a few months.  They were apparently short staffed so only took AD.  This was a local clinic level decision.

I guess theoretically you could find a tricare approved provider off base, but I don't know how well that would work since everyone was affected by the same policy.

  • Do not cancel the TRICARE insurance.  You have to have this insurance to get care if you are seem off base.... And the odds are, you will be seen off base.

Dependent care is Space A PERIOD.  Monkey gets care becuase SS was getting care on base and we were slid in by the pediatric dentist.

HOWEVER, SS's ortho work was on base ONLY becuase his braces were out on prior to coming here. But if he had to get them, it would have been off base.

I have only been able to get ONE cleaning on base...and we am good friends with the Periodontasts family (nepotism and rank just doesn't work for the grown-ups).

When I worked in Tricare several years ago we use to encourage beneficiaries to keep their dental insurance - not only because of the reasons you mentioned, but also for when you go on leave back to the states.  If you need to see a dentist while you are here but cancelled your insurance, you could be stuck with a hefty bill.

  • In Guam it isn't covered either--- we have to see an outside provider and keep dental insurance

  • Tricare most certainly does not cover dental overseas if you cancel your United Concordia benefits. I had UC, just for overseas. I was seen on base, but UC was billed and all of that. What they cover overseas is more all-encompassing but what you need to do is switch to the overseas plan instead of the CONUS plan. Plus, in case of an emergency that requires you going to an off post dentist, you'll need your coverage.
